CHAPTER 8 – "The Man Ryan Called Father Was the Devil All Along"

The helicopter blades slowly came to a stop.

An elderly man stepped onto the pavement wearing a perfectly tailored gray suit. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his polished shoes reflected the flashing police lights.

No one spoke.

Ryan stared at him with tears in his eyes.

"...Father?"

The man smiled warmly.

"My boy."

For years, Ryan had believed this man—Richard Ashcroft—had rescued him after losing his parents. Richard had paid for his schools, built his career, and treated him like a son.

Or so Ryan believed.

Richard calmly surveyed the crowd before stopping in front of Evelyn.

"You've been looking for me."

Evelyn's voice trembled with rage.

"I've waited thirty years for this moment."

Richard chuckled.

"You should have stopped searching."

Detective Daniel stepped forward, drawing his weapon.

"Richard Ashcroft, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, kidnapping, and obstruction of justice."

Richard didn't flinch.

Instead, he slowly reached into his jacket.

Every officer raised their guns.

But Richard pulled out only a worn leather wallet.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed a little boy...

Standing beside Richard.

Ryan.

"You've spent your entire life wondering why I saved you," Richard said softly.

Ryan swallowed hard.

"Why?"

Richard looked directly into his eyes.

"Because I didn't destroy your family..."

"...I created it."

Silence crashed over everyone.

Emily felt her knees weaken.

"What does that mean?"

Richard smiled.

"Ryan..."

"...your parents couldn't have children."

Ryan frowned.

"What?"

"They adopted you."

Ryan's breathing stopped.

Richard continued.

"I arranged the adoption."

"And years later..."

"I arranged the fire."

Evelyn gasped in horror.

Richard's voice remained disturbingly calm.

"Your adoptive parents discovered who I really was."

"They planned to expose everything."

"So I eliminated them."

Ryan backed away, shaking uncontrollably.

"You raised me..."

"...after murdering them?"

Richard nodded without remorse.

"I needed someone loyal."

"I spent thirty years shaping you into the man I wanted."

Ryan suddenly understood.

Every business decision...

Every relationship...

Every lie...

Every cruel choice he had made...

Richard had encouraged them all.

"I turned you into exactly what I needed."

Ryan collapsed onto the pavement, sobbing.

"I became a monster..."

Richard smiled coldly.

"No."

"You became my masterpiece."

At that moment, Detective Daniel held up the cassette tape again.

"We finally have enough evidence."

Richard laughed.

"You think that's enough to convict me?"

He pressed a button hidden inside his watch.

Suddenly—

BOOM!

A deafening explosion erupted from the evidence van parked across the street.

Flames shot into the night sky.

Boxes of files, hard drives, and decades of evidence disappeared in seconds.

The officers rushed toward the fire.

Richard slowly raised both hands... and smiled.

"You've lost everything."

But before anyone could react...

A small voice broke the silence.

"That's not true."

Everyone turned.

Little Lily stepped forward, clutching a pink stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.

"I copied everything."

Emily blinked.

"What?"

Lily unzipped the rabbit's back.

Hidden inside was a tiny encrypted flash drive.

"My mommy always told me to keep important things safe."

Detective Daniel carefully took the drive.

"What is on this?"

Lily smiled innocently.

"The videos..."

"The recordings..."

"And one more file Grandpa Richard forgot about."

Richard's confident smile vanished for the first time.

Daniel plugged the drive into his tablet.

A hidden security video appeared on the screen.

The timestamp read:

The footage showed Richard standing outside the burning house...

Holding a gasoline can.

And looking directly into the camera.

Richard whispered in the video:

"No one will ever know I started this fire."

The parking lot fell silent.

Ryan slowly stood.

He looked at the man he had called "Father" for three decades.

Then he said the words Richard never expected to hear:

"You're not my father anymore."

As handcuffs clicked around Richard's wrists, he lowered his head for the first time.

The empire he had built with lies...

Had finally burned to the ground.
