Chapter 1 - The First StrikeThe shrill, piercing shriek of the heart monitor filled the sterile ICU room, driving a spike of pure terror straight into my chest.

"Code Blue! We're losing her, prep the adrenaline!" Dr. Bennett shouted, elbowing past the crash cart as nurses flooded the room.
My knees buckled. I grabbed the metal railing of Lily's bed to keep from collapsing. Just moments ago, Daniel's chilling words had echoed through the phone: "Vanessa needed it more. She’s worth more to me than that little girl."
He had stolen our daughter's life-saving immunotherapy doses, redirecting them to his twenty-three-year-old assistant and mistress to buy her affection, leaving our eight-year-old to die.
Dr. Bennett slammed the speakerphone button off, his face pale with cold fury. "Mrs. Carter, where did he route those batches? If it's still in the hospital's central pharmacy wing, security can intercept it before it leaves the building."
I wiped a tear from my cheek, the trembling fear instantly hardening into diamond-forged ice. The soft, submissive wife who had ignored the warning signs for years was dead. Standing in her place was an executive heir.
"He didn't route it through the regular pharmacy channels," I said, my voice dropping an octave, steady and sharp. "He used his senior administrator override code to log it as 'spoiled inventory' and had it couriered directly to a private residential address in North Hills."
"North Hills? That’s thirty miles away!" Dr. Bennett cursed, turning back to the bed. "Nurse, push 5 milligrams of rescue corticosteroids now! We need to buy time!"
I pulled my phone back from the doctor's hand, unlocked it with a firm thumbprint, and bypassed the call log entirely. I didn't dial Daniel back. I dialed a private, unlisted satellite number that bypassed all standard switchboards.
It rang only once before a deep, gravelly, yet impeccably refined voice answered.
"State your authorization code and your emergency," the voice of Marcus Sterling—Chief General Counsel for Sterling Healthcare Group and my maternal uncle—boomed through the receiver.
"Uncle Marcus," I whispered, staring at my daughter’s blue-tinged lips as the nurses fought to drag her back from the edge. "Daniel just diverted Lily's life-support medication to his mistress. Lily is crashing in St. Matthew's ICU. And Daniel Carter just committed corporate grand larceny, medical endangerment, and attempted manslaughter using our hospital's inventory system."

A heavy, terrifying silence fell on the other end of the line. When Marcus spoke again, the temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.
"Lock down the hospital records locally, Emily," Uncle Marcus murmured, a low rumble of absolute power. "I am dispatching a federal compliance audit team and our private security detail to St. Matthew’s right now. And as for your husband... tell him his termination is already signed. By midnight, he won't even own the clothes on his back."
