Chapter 4 - The Family LegacyBack in the ICU, the rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor finally stabilized.

Beep... beep... beep...
I let out a ragged, shuddering breath I felt like I’d been holding for an eternity. Lily’s color was slowly returning to her cheeks. Her tiny chest rose and fell in a normal, rhythmic pattern. Dr. Bennett wiped his forehead with a sterile gauze pad, offering me a tight, exhausted smile of relief.
"She's out of immediate danger, Emily," Dr. Bennett said softly, resting a comforting hand on my shoulder. "The new batch took effect just in time. She’s a fighter, just like her mother."
"Thank you, Doctor," I whispered, gently kissing Lily’s warm knuckles.
Just then, the heavy glass doors of the ICU slid open. Uncle Marcus strode into the room, flanked by two corporate security directors and a legal aide carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Uncle Marcus was sixty-five, but he carried himself with the athletic authority of a man half his age. His sharp blue eyes scanned the room before locking onto me. He walked over, gently pulling me into a warm, protective embrace.
"Are you alright, my girl?" he murmured into my hair.
"I am now, Uncle," I pulled back, my eyes hardening again. "How is Daniel handling his wakeup call?"
Uncle Marcus let out a cold, humorless chuckle, signaling his legal aide to open the briefcase.
"He's currently screaming his lungs out in his locked office, banging on the glass while federal marshals secure the building," Marcus said, pulling out a thick sheaf of legal documents stamped with red seals. "When Daniel married you ten years ago, he thought you were just a sweet, unassuming graphic designer from a modest background. He was so busy climbing the corporate ladder of Sterling Healthcare that he never bothered to look at the founding shareholder registry."
"He always thought he was the smartest man in any room," I replied bitterly. "He used to mock my part-time art charity work, telling me I didn't understand how 'real power' worked."
"Real power," Uncle Marcus scoffed, slamming a document onto the bedside table, "is owning the very hospital network that pays his six-figure salary. When you chose to drop your last name during our wedding vows to keep a low profile so Daniel could feel like the 'man of the house,' you didn't legally relinquish your voting shares in the Sterling Trust. You merely put them in a dormant trust."
Marcus tapped the top document with a gold pen.
May you like
"And with one single signature tonight, I have officially dissolved that dormant status. As of five minutes ago, Emily Sterling-Carter owns fifty-one percent of Sterling Healthcare Group. Which means, legally speaking..."
Marcus smiled grimly. "You are Daniel’s ultimate boss. And I have just authorized his immediate, dishonorable termination for gross professional misconduct, asset misappropriation, and child endangerment."
