Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of VanessaAcross town, in a brightly lit federal processing bullpen, Vanessa Cole sat at a plastic folding table, sobbing uncontrollably into her cuffed hands.

The high-end designer makeup she was so proud of was streaked black down her cheeks from tears of sheer self-pity. Standing across from her was her court-appointed public defender, a tired-looking man named Mr. Henderson, who was flipping through a thick binder of digital evidence handed over by Sterling Healthcare's legal team.

"Ms. Cole," Mr. Henderson said bluntly, not bothering to hide his irritation. "Do you have any idea how deep you are in this?"

"I didn't know!" Vanessa wailed, sniffing loudly. "Daniel told me he bought them! He said they were his personal allotment! He told me his wife was just a crazy housewife who didn't understand corporate perks!"

"Corporate perks?" Henderson let out a dry, humorless laugh, tossing a printed email chain onto the table. "Ms. Cole, these aren't perks. These are serial-numbered, temperature-controlled federal healthcare products. And right here, in these text messages recovered from your phone, you explicitly thanked Mr. Carter for stealing them from a pediatric unit."

Vanessa snatched the papers up, her eyes scanning the text messages she had sent just hours ago.

“Emily is probably losing her mind up there, haha.”

Her stomach churned. The bravado, the arrogance, the feeling of invincibility of being the boss's favorite mistress—it all vanished in an instant, replaced by the crushing realization that she had hitched her wagon to a sinking ship driven by a madman.

"Can't I cut a deal?" Vanessa whispered, grabbing Henderson’s sleeve. "I'll testify against Daniel! I'll tell the court everything he did! He pressured me! He manipulated me!"

Just then, the heavy glass door of the consultation room opened, and Agent Vance stepped inside, holding a digital tablet.

He looked at Vanessa with stone-cold indifference.

"Save your breath for the judge, Ms. Cole," Vance said, tapping the screen. "In fact, your boyfriend in the next cell just signed a full confession statement, attempting to pin ninety percent of the inventory diversion scheme directly on you, claiming you forged his electronic signature to steal the medication behind his back."

Vanessa froze. The color drained completely from her face.

"H-He... he blamed me?" she whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, white-hot fury. "He said I did it?!"

"Word for word," Vance replied smoothly. "He’s currently trying to trade your freedom for a reduced sentence. So, unless you have something genuinely useful to give us regarding his wider embezzlement network across the entire regional hospital grid, you're looking at a mandatory minimum of five to ten years in federal prison for medical fraud and endangerment."

Vanessa sat in absolute silence for three seconds. Then, a dark, venomous look twisted her features.

"Give me a pen," she hissed, her voice shaking with rage. "I have five years of his offshore accounts, secret burner phones, and embezzlement receipts. I’m taking him down with me."
