Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s Luxury TrapThirty miles away, in a sleek, high-end loft apartment in North Hills, Vanessa Cole was uncorking a bottle of expensive vintage champagne.

The sleek white cooler box sat on her marble kitchen island, bearing the official bio-hazard and pharmaceutical seals of Sterling Healthcare Group. Inside lay three pristine, highly regulated vials of immunosuppressive medication—each one worth thousands of dollars on the black market, and each one desperately needed by an eight-year-old child fighting for her life.

Vanessa admired her reflection in the glass patio door. She ran a hand through her dyed blonde hair, smiling triumphantly.

Emily, you pathetic housewife, Vanessa thought smugly. You thought you could lock down a rising corporate star like Daniel? He’s mine now. And your kid is just collateral damage.

She popped the top of one of the vials with a small plastic syringe, eager to prep her "treatment" to show off to Daniel when he finally got off work.

Suddenly, a massive, thunderous crash echoed through the hallway outside her apartment door.

BANG! BANG!

Before Vanessa could even drop the syringe, the heavy wooden front door of her luxury loft was blown completely off its reinforced steel hinges, crashing violently onto her plush designer rug.

"FBI! FEDERAL POSTAL INSPECTION SERVICE! NO ONE MOVE!"

A swarm of tactical gear-clad enforcement officers rushed into the apartment, weapons raised, laser sights painting the walls in eerie red dots. Behind them strode two men in dark tailored suits, holding clipboards and digital evidence bags.

Vanessa screamed, dropping the syringe, her champagne glass shattering on the floor.

"What—what is the meaning of this?! Who do you think you are?!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away until her spine hit the kitchen counter. "I’m an executive assistant at Sterling Healthcare! You can't just break into my home!"

The lead investigator, a tall, imposing man with graying temples named Agent Vance, stepped forward. He didn't even look at her face; his eyes were locked entirely on the pharmaceutical cooler box resting on her marble counter.

"Vanessa Cole?" Agent Vance asked, his voice flat and lethal.

"Y-Yes! I demand to speak to my lawyer—"

"Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for receiving, possessing, and trafficking stolen Class-2 controlled pharmaceutical products acquired through interstate corporate embezzlement," Agent Vance barked, holding up an official arrest warrant. "Furthermore, these specific lots were illegally diverted from a pediatric patient under critical care. That elevates this charge from felony grand theft to reckless endangerment resulting in bodily harm."

"Stolen?!" Vanessa stammered, her face turning chalk white as two female officers stepped forward, roughly grabbing her arms and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. "Daniel gave them to me! He said they were extras! He said he bought them for me!"

Agent Vance walked over to the counter, carefully picking up the open cooler box and sliding it into an airtight evidence bag. He turned back to look at Vanessa with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Mr. Carter didn't buy anything, Ms. Cole," Agent Vance said coldly. "And right now, your precious boyfriend is discovering that the woman whose daughter he tried to murder isn't just an ordinary housewife. She’s the granddaughter of Arthur Sterling himself."

Vanessa’s knees gave out completely, and she collapsed onto the floor amidst the broken champagne glass and spilled medical supplies.
