Chapter 2 - The Audit TrapDown in the subterranean administrative levels of St. Matthew’s Hospital, Daniel Carter leaned back in his leather ergonomic chair, a smug, self-satisfied smirk plastered across his face.

He took a sip of his lukewarm macchiato, checking his watch. It was 11:15 PM. Lily would probably stabilize on her own—kids were resilient, after all. Emily was just being dramatic, as usual, trying to guilt him into spending more time at home instead of appreciating the high-stakes corporate ladder he was climbing.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was a text message from Vanessa:

“Baby, the courier just dropped off the package. The vials are gorgeous. Thank you for saving my life. Emily is probably losing her mind up there, haha. You're my hero.”

Daniel chuckled aloud, typing back:

“Enjoy it, gorgeous. Don’t worry about my ungrateful wife. She’ll get over it once Lily is discharged. Besides, who’s going to audit a senior administrator with a clean ten-year record? I run the supply chain here.”

Right as he hit send, the overhead fluorescent lights in his private office flickered twice and died, plunging the room into emergency red-tinted backup lighting.

Click. Whir.

The electronic deadbolt on his office door engaged with a sharp mechanical thud, locking automatically from the outside.

Daniel frowned, standing up and walking over to the heavy oak door. He twisted the brass handle. It didn't budge.

"Hello? Is this a power surge?" Daniel muttered, tapping his security badge against the wall scanner.

The scanner flashed a violent, unyielding RED: ACCESS REVOKED.

A cold drop of sweat formed at the back of his neck. He rushed back to his desk and slammed his hands onto his computer keyboard, attempting to log into his administrative dashboard.

The screen flashed blinding white, then displayed a single, terrifying block of text:

CRITICAL SECURITY ALERT: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED UNDER PENAL CODE 487 (GRAND LARCENY) & FEDERAL PHARMACEUTICAL FRAUD ACT. ALL ASSETS, CREDENTIALS, AND CLEARANCES FROZEN BY STERLING HEALTHCARE GROUP EXECUTIVE BOARD. REMAIN IN YOUR LOCATION. FEDERAL MARSHALS AND INTERNAL COMPLIANCE ENFORCERS ARE EN ROUTE.

"No... no, no, no! This is a glitch!" Daniel screamed, frantically hammering his keyboard. "I'm the senior administrator! I am the supply chain!"

Suddenly, the wall-mounted television screen in his office—usually reserved for corporate metrics and quarterly earnings reports—turned on by itself.

The screen flickered, showing a live, high-definition feed of St. Matthew’s ICU. Through the monitor, Daniel could see Dr. Bennett standing over a bed, hooking up a fresh, emergency-couriered batch of immunotherapy medication to an IV drip, while a team of hospital security guards stood shoulder-to-shoulder with two armed federal postal inspectors holding a federal search warrant.

And right in the center of the screen stood his wife, Emily, staring directly into the camera lens with eyes as cold and empty as a winter grave.
