CHAPTER 4 — The Cemetery Meeting

At sunrise, Richard drove alone to the address hidden inside the black envelope.
An abandoned cemetery on the outskirts of the city.
Fog rolled across the old gravestones.
There was no one.
Until an elderly man stepped from behind a weathered monument.
Gray beard.
Long black coat.
Walking with a cane.
Richard immediately recognized him.
His knees nearly gave out.
"Samuel..."
"It can't be."
Twenty-five years earlier, Samuel Grant had vanished after exposing financial fraud involving one of the country's largest investment groups.
The official story claimed he had died in a house fire.
The newspapers called it an accident.
Richard had believed it.
Samuel smiled sadly.
"That's exactly what they wanted everyone to believe."
Richard struggled to speak.
"Emily knew you were alive?"
Samuel nodded.
"For eighteen years."
Richard felt the world spin.
"Eighteen years..."
"You mean..."
"She was never investigating alone."
Samuel slowly opened an old leather folder.
Inside were faded birth records.
Hospital documents.
Family photographs.
One certificate made Richard stop breathing.
Birth Name: Jonathan Hayes
Richard stared at it.
"My name isn't Richard Carter?"
Samuel shook his head.
"No."
"You've been living under another family's identity since you were three years old."
Richard backed away in shock.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
Samuel handed him a photograph.
A young woman holding a little boy.
The boy looked exactly like Richard.
On the back...
"To my son Jonathan... we'll find you."
Richard's entire life suddenly felt borrowed.
Every memory.
Every document.
Every success.
Every failure.
Who was he?
Meanwhile...
Lily returned home and found the front door open.
Every drawer had been emptied.
Every photograph destroyed.
The hidden floor compartment smashed apart.
Whoever searched the house hadn't been looking for money.
They had been looking for one thing.
Evidence.
As Lily stood in the wreckage, her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
She answered carefully.
A frightened female voice whispered,
"Don't trust Samuel."
The call ended.
Seconds later, another text message arrived.
It contained only GPS coordinates.
And one sentence.
Your mother left something only you can unlock.
That evening...
Richard and Lily met again.
Neither trusted anyone anymore.
Samuel spread dozens of old files across the table.
"There are hundreds of fake identities."
"Hundreds of stolen inheritances."
"Hundreds of lives rewritten."
Richard whispered,
"Who could build something this big?"
Samuel looked toward the window.
His expression suddenly changed.
"Get down!"
A sniper's bullet shattered the glass.
The lights exploded.
Chaos filled the room.
Samuel pushed Lily to the floor.
Richard grabbed the files.
Outside...
A black motorcycle disappeared into the darkness.
When the police arrived minutes later...
Samuel was gone.
Only one bloodstained note remained on the floor.
Written in Emily's handwriting.
Don't follow the evidence...
Follow the child they never found.
Richard and Lily looked at each other.
"There was another child?"
May you like
Neither of them realized...
The answer would uncover a secret capable of destroying some of the most powerful people in the country.
