CHAPTER 7 — The Woman Behind the Mask

Richard couldn't stop staring at the signature.
Grace.
For twenty years, he had believed his past was gone forever.
Now, a single name had reopened every wound.
The next evening, Stone Global's annual charity gala glittered beneath thousands of crystal lights. Politicians, billionaires, celebrities, and journalists filled the ballroom. Television cameras broadcast every smile.
No one noticed Richard slipping quietly through a side entrance.
Emily's final investigation had led him here.
Across the room stood Eleanor Stone.
Elegant.
Calm.
Surrounded by security.
When she turned toward him, time seemed to stop.
Those eyes.
The same deep blue eyes Richard saw every morning in the mirror.
She dismissed her security team with a subtle gesture.
"Leave us."
The guards hesitated.
Then obeyed.
Richard walked closer.
"Who are you?"
Eleanor studied his face for a long moment.
"I've been asking myself that same question my entire life."
She reached into her evening bag and removed an old silver locket.
Inside was a faded photograph of two laughing toddlers.
One was Richard.
The other...
A little girl wearing the same birth bracelet found in Locker 19.
Richard's voice broke.
"Grace..."
Tears gathered in Eleanor's eyes.
"No."
"My name has been Eleanor Stone for twenty-eight years."
"But once..."
"I was Grace Hayes."
Richard pulled her into a trembling embrace.
Neither of them spoke.
The ballroom faded away.
For one brief moment...
They were no longer strangers.
They were simply brother and sister.
Across the room, Lily watched from the press section.
She had entered using her credentials as an investigative journalist.
Hidden beneath her camera was a tiny encrypted drive containing every document Emily had collected over two decades.
She planned to publish everything after the gala.
Emily's truth would finally belong to the world.
Then a waiter accidentally bumped into her.
"I'm so sorry, ma'am."
The tray fell.
Glasses shattered across the floor.
The waiter leaned close enough to whisper one sentence.
"Don't upload the files."
Lily froze.
The waiter disappeared into the crowd before she could react.
Seconds later, every screen inside the ballroom switched from the charity presentation to a live security feed.
Richard.
Standing beside Eleanor.
The room fell silent.
Whispers spread like wildfire.
"Why is she hugging him?"
"Who is that man?"
"What is happening?"
Eleanor looked toward the control booth.
Someone had hacked the broadcast.
A distorted voice echoed through the speakers.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"You are about to witness the reunion that was never supposed to happen."
The lights went out.
One gunshot rang through the ballroom.
Then another.
People screamed.
Security rushed in every direction.
When the emergency lights finally flickered on...
Richard was kneeling beside Eleanor.
Blood stained the front of her white gown.
She looked up at him and whispered,
"They've found us..."
Then she slipped a tiny flash drive into his hand.
"Emily trusted you more than she admitted."
Her eyes slowly closed.
The ambulance arrived within minutes.
Doctors fought to keep her alive.
As they rushed her away, Richard looked down at the flash drive.

Only one file appeared.
