CHAPTER 9 — Beneath Blackstone Station

The old subway clock read 11:19 PM.

Richard and Lily raced down the abandoned service tunnel beneath Blackstone Station, guided only by Emily's hand-drawn map.

The deeper they went, the quieter the city became.

Finally...

They reached a massive steel door.

Stamped across it were two faded words:

ARCHIVE B-17

The electronic lock had no keypad.

Only a fingerprint scanner.

Lily frowned.

"How are we supposed to open this?"

Richard looked at Emily's final note again.

Then he noticed something folded inside the paper.

A tiny transparent strip.

Emily's preserved fingerprint.

Lily carefully placed it on the scanner.

ACCESS GRANTED.

The heavy door slowly groaned open.

Inside was not a vault.

It was an underground records room the size of a football field.

Shelves stretched into darkness.

Thousands of boxes.

Millions of documents.

Birth certificates.

Property deeds.

Adoption records.

Corporate ownership files.

Every lie Project Phoenix had ever created.

Emily hadn't collected evidence.

She had found the original archive.

Lily whispered,

"This... could rewrite history."

Then they heard applause.

Slow.

Cold.

Deliberate.

A man stepped from the shadows.

Perfect gray suit.

Silver hair.

Calm smile.

Richard recognized him instantly.

Victor Langley.

The billionaire philanthropist admired around the world.

He had donated hospitals.

Built schools.

Appeared on magazine covers as one of the most trusted men in the country.

Victor smiled politely.

"I've been waiting for you."

Richard's fists tightened.

"You destroyed our family."

Victor tilted his head.

"No."

"I simply offered people choices."

Richard lunged toward him.

Victor didn't move.

Instead...

Large monitors around the archive suddenly came to life.

Old surveillance videos filled every screen.

Richard watched in horror.

The day he signed the divorce papers.

The day Emily hid the documents.

The day Lily was born.

Every moment of their lives...

Someone had been watching.

"For thirty years," Victor said calmly, "your family has been my favorite insurance policy."

Lily stepped forward.

"My mother beat you."

Victor laughed.

"No."

"Your mother delayed me."

He pressed a small remote.

Several shelves began collapsing.

Fire erupted throughout the archive.

Automatic shredders roared to life.

Thousands of irreplaceable documents disappeared every second.

"No!" Lily screamed.

Richard grabbed as many boxes as he could.

Victor calmly walked toward the exit.

"You can save your evidence..."

"...or you can save your sister."

Richard froze.

"What did you say?"

Victor smiled.

"Grace is alive."

"But only until midnight."

The steel doors slammed shut.

The countdown on the emergency wall clock flashed.

00:32...

They had thirty-two minutes to choose.

Save the evidence...

Or save Grace.

Richard looked at Lily.

Lily looked back at him.

Then, without hesitation, she threw the boxes aside.

"My mother didn't spend twenty years teaching me to save paper."

"She taught me to save people."

Richard nodded.

For the first time in his life...

He chose family over everything else.

They ran.

Leaving the burning archive behind.

The map led them beneath an abandoned railway platform.

Hidden behind a concrete wall was a small elevator.

Its doors opened automatically.

Descending...

Thirty meters underground.

The elevator stopped.

A single hallway stretched ahead.

At the end stood a reinforced glass room.

Inside...

Grace was alive.

Weak.

Handcuffed.

But smiling.

Richard rushed forward.

"I'm here."

Grace whispered,

"I knew you'd come."

Before Richard could break the glass...

Victor's voice echoed through hidden speakers.

"One final decision."

"The woman..."

"Or the truth."

The ceiling began shaking.

May you like

Explosives had been activated.

The entire underground complex was about to collapse.
