CHAPTER 8 — Project Phoenix

Richard, Lily, and Samuel hid inside an abandoned publishing warehouse before sunrise.
The flash drive contained thousands of encrypted files.
Most were impossible to read.
Except one.
A video Emily had recorded only weeks before her death.
She looked tired.
Older.
But determined.
"If you're watching this..."
"Then Grace has finally found you."
Richard felt tears filling his eyes again.
Emily smiled gently into the camera.
"I know both of you probably blame yourselves."
"Stop."
"The people who destroyed our family wanted exactly that."
She paused before continuing.
"Project Phoenix was never just about stolen identities."
"It was about replacing powerful people with carefully controlled ones."
Birth records altered.
Adoptions manipulated.
Financial heirs erased.
Families divided.
Entire fortunes redirected without anyone noticing.
Emily held up a thick folder.
"Everything they feared is inside these records."
"If this reaches the public..."
"The empire ends."
The screen suddenly filled with static.
Then another face appeared.
An older man wearing a black suit.
Richard recognized him instantly.
Senator Malcolm Reeves.
One of the country's most respected political figures.
He looked directly into the camera.
"If anyone is seeing this..."
"Then Emily Carter was right."
"I helped build Project Phoenix."
"And I've spent the last fifteen years trying to destroy it from the inside."
The confession ended abruptly.
Silence filled the warehouse.
Lily whispered,
"My mother wasn't exposing one corrupt company..."
"She was exposing the people who created the entire system."
Samuel nodded.
"And now every person involved knows you have this."
Hours later, every major news channel interrupted its programming.
BREAKING NEWS
Eleanor Stone Survives Assassination Attempt.
Reporters surrounded the hospital.
Police claimed the attack had been carried out by a lone gunman.
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"They're already rewriting the story."
Lily suddenly noticed something strange.
The photograph released by the hospital wasn't Eleanor.
It was someone else.
A woman who looked similar...
But not identical.
She enlarged the image.
The scar above the eyebrow was gone.
"The woman in this photo..."
"...isn't Grace."
Samuel's expression turned grave.
"They've replaced her."
Before anyone could respond, the warehouse doors burst open.
Masked attackers flooded the building.
Richard grabbed the flash drive.
Lily clutched Emily's files.
Samuel shouted,
"Run!"
A fierce chase erupted through the abandoned printing presses.
Richard and Lily barely escaped through an underground loading tunnel.
When they finally reached safety...
Samuel was nowhere to be found.
Only his broken cane remained behind.
Inside it was a tightly rolled piece of paper.
In Samuel's handwriting were eight chilling words:
Don't rescue me... Save Grace before midnight.
Richard looked at his watch.
11:07 PM.
They had less than one hour.
Then Lily unfolded the second page hidden inside the cane.
A map.
Beneath it, Emily's final handwritten message:

The last truth isn't in the files...
It's waiting beneath Blackstone Station.
