CHAPTER 5 — The Child They Never Found

The bloodstained note lay on the table between Richard and Lily.
Don't follow the evidence... Follow the child they never found.
Neither of them spoke.
Finally, Lily looked up.
"My mother wasn't writing about me."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No..."
"There was another child."
The realization settled over the room like ice.
Emily hadn't spent twenty years collecting documents just to expose financial crimes.
She had been searching for someone.
Someone powerful people desperately wanted erased.
The next morning, Lily discovered one final clue hidden inside the faded family photograph Emily had kept for decades.
The back of the picture had been carefully separated into two layers.
Inside was a tiny strip of photographic film.
Alongside it, six handwritten words:
St. Gabriel's Hospital.
Basement Archive.
Locker 19.
The hospital had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years.
Broken windows.
Collapsed ceilings.
Dust covered everything.
Richard forced open the rusted basement door while Lily shined her flashlight into the darkness.
Rows of forgotten storage lockers stretched before them.
Most had already been forced open.
Except one.
Locker 19.
Inside rested a small metal box wrapped in plastic.
No money.
No jewelry.
Only a baby bracelet.
A birth certificate.
And a VHS tape.
Richard picked up the bracelet.
The tiny engraved name made his hands tremble.
JONATHAN HAYES.
"My real name..."
Lily opened the birth certificate.
Her heart nearly stopped.
It listed twins.
Jonathan Hayes.
Grace Hayes.
Richard stared at the page.
"I had... a twin sister?"
Lily whispered,
"She disappeared the same day you disappeared."
Before either of them could speak again—
Footsteps echoed through the basement.
Someone else had entered the building.
Richard quickly shut off the flashlight.
Three figures walked past the lockers carrying rifles.
One of them said quietly,
"Search every room."
"The box must still be here."
Lily held her breath.
Richard tightened his grip on the metal case.
Then...
His phone vibrated.
One new message.
WE KNOW YOU FOUND THE TAPE.
The screen went black.
Every light inside the basement suddenly went out.
Gunshots shattered the silence.
They escaped through an old maintenance tunnel and drove straight to Samuel's hidden cabin outside the city.
Samuel examined the bracelet without saying a word.
Finally, he looked at Richard.
"I prayed this day would never come."
Richard slammed both hands onto the table.
"Who took my sister?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"Not criminals."
"People wearing expensive suits."
"They discovered that the Hayes family controlled evidence linking several powerful corporations to decades of fraud. When your parents refused to hand it over, their children became targets."
Lily's voice shook.
"So my mother knew?"
Samuel nodded.
"Emily found Grace's trail years ago."
Richard leaned forward.
"Where is she?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"I don't know."
"But someone else does."
He pushed an old newspaper across the table.
One photograph had been circled in red.
A smiling woman at a charity gala.
The caption read:
CEO Eleanor Stone Donates $500 Million to Children's Foundations.
Samuel tapped the picture.
"She built an empire helping abandoned children."
Then his expression darkened.
"Because she was once one of the children who disappeared."
Richard stared at the photograph.
Something about Eleanor's eyes felt strangely familiar.
The same eyes he saw every morning in the mirror.
Just as he reached for the newspaper—
The cabin exploded.
The blast threw all three of them to the floor.
May you like
Flames swallowed the walls.
Someone had found them again.
