Chapter 1 - The Descent into Darkness

VIRAL HOOK: "You think the ocean was their grave? You have no idea who was waiting at the bottom of the cliff..."

The air was ripped apart by the scream of tearing metal.

When the stepmother’s blade severed the heavy winch cable, the snap echoed like a gunshot across the desolate coastal cliff. The rear wheels of the sedan slipped past the edge, gravity claiming its prize with terrifying velocity.

Daniel didn’t hesitate. As the car plummeted, his fingers locked around his wife, Sarah’s, blood-slicked wrist. The sheer force of the falling two-ton vehicle dragged his chest against the jagged rocks, skin tearing through his shirt.

"Daniel, let me go!" Sarah screamed, her eyes wide with terror as she clutched her three-year-old daughter, Lily, tightly against her chest with her free arm. "You’re going to die! Save yourself!"

"Never!" Daniel roared, his veins bulging, muscles straining to the absolute brink of human rupture. "I told you—I’d rather fall than lose you!"

Above them, standing at the precipice with the bloody knife in hand, Evelyn—Sarah’s cold, scheming stepmother—smirked down at them. "Goodbye, Daniel. You were always too sentimental for the Sterling fortune." She gave the front bumper of Daniel’s wrecked SUV one last shove, letting it tilt over the ridge to ensure their absolute destruction.

The falling SUV struck the rocky outcropping right above Daniel, triggering a mini-landslide. Boulders and metal rained down. A heavy fragment struck Daniel across the temple. Vision blurring, dark crimson blood blinding his left eye, his grip slipped.

They fell.

The wind screamed in their ears during three seconds of pure, unadulterated horror. Below them lay the sharp, black teeth of the jagged sea rocks and the furious, churning dark water of Devil’s Cauldron Bay.

CRASH.

The impact with the ocean was like hitting concrete. Water instantly shattered the side windows, rushing into the cabin with violent force. The sedan flipped upside down as it sank like a stone into the freezing dark abyss.

Underwater, silence took over. Daniel plunged in right after them. His lungs burned, his head throbbed with a concussive pulse, but adrenaline overrode his dying body’s cries for peace. Swimming blindly through the murky ocean water, he spotted the glowing taillights of the car sinking fast into the depths.

He reached the driver’s side door. The frame was warped, stuck fast. Inside, Sarah was losing consciousness, air bubbles escaping her lips while Lily kicked weakly in her car seat.

Daniel grabbed a sharp rock off an underwater ledge, swam up, and smashed the driver's side window with everything he had left. The glass shattered. He reached in, violently unbuckling Lily, and shoved her into Sarah’s arms. With his remaining strength, he grabbed Sarah by the collar and dragged her out of the drowning steel coffin.

They kicked toward the surface, bursting through the furious white foam just as their lungs were on the verge of exploding.

"Lily! Is she breathing?!" Sarah gasped, coughing up salt water, treading frantically.

Daniel pulled Lily’s face above water. The child spluttered, crying weakly. "She’s alive, Sarah! She’s alive!"

They scrambled toward a hidden cave along the cliff base, barely escaping the brutal tide that pounded against the sharp rocks. Collapsing onto the cold sand inside the cavern, Daniel pulled his trembling wife and daughter into his arms.

They were bleeding, exhausted, and presumed dead by the world above.

Suddenly, a flashlight beam cut through the pitch-black darkness of the cave.

"Well, well, well..." a deep, raspy voice boomed from the shadows. "Look what the tide washed in. Evelyn thought she finished you off, didn't she?"

May you like

Sarah froze. She recognized that voice. It was a voice that belonged to a man who had been declared dead five years ago.

Chapter 1 Cliffhanger: Standing in the beam of the flashlight was Arthur Sterling—Sarah’s biological father, who had supposedly died in a plane crash that gave Evelyn control of the family empire.
