Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

VIRAL HOOK: "A secret text message exposed his wife’s deep betrayal. Was the woman he nearly died saving actually in on it?!"
The underground river spat them out onto a muddy bank two miles north of the cliffs, near an abandoned industrial shipyard.
Panting, shivering uncontrollably from hypothermia, Daniel pulled Sarah and Lily out of the water. They were battered, bruised, but miraculously breathing. While Sarah wrapped Lily in a discarded burlap sack inside a rusted shipping container to keep her warm, Daniel pulled out his waterproof pouch.
The phone screen glowed bright in the dark.
The message stared back at him like a venomous snake: UNKNOWN: Don't trust Sarah. She knew Arthur was alive all along. Check her jacket pocket.
Daniel’s blood ran colder than the sea. He looked over at Sarah, who was gently singing a lullaby to the shivering, traumatized little girl. No, he thought. Not Sarah. She wept for her father. She almost died back there.
Yet, the seed of doubt was planted.
While Sarah stepped to the back of the container to try and wring out her wet hair, Daniel quietly approached her discarded leather jacket resting on a wooden crate. He reached inside the inner zipper pocket.
His fingers touched cold metal and plastic.
He pulled out a encrypted satellite burner phone—and a sleek USB thumb drive bearing the seal of the Sterling Global Syndicate. Daniel powered on the burner phone. The last dialled number was saved under a single letter: A.
Arthur.
Daniel felt like he had been shot in the heart. He turned slowly, his eyes wild with hurt and confusion. "Sarah..."
Sarah turned around, her face instantly paling when she saw what was in his hands. "Daniel... I can explain."
"You knew?" Daniel’s voice cracked, full of betrayal. "I jumped off a cliff for you! I dragged you out of a drowning car! I took a boulder to the skull for you! And you’ve been in contact with your father?!"
"It's not what you think!" Sarah cried out, rushing toward him, but Daniel backed away, pulling Lily toward him defensively.
"Explain it then!" Daniel barked. "Because right now, it looks like I’m the idiot who fought to save a woman playing both sides of a four-billion-dollar game!"
"I was protecting you!" Sarah sobbed, falling to her knees. "Arthur contacted me six months ago! He threatened to kill you and Lily if I didn't help him unlock the trust fund! Evelyn didn't know Arthur was controlling her—Arthur was playing Evelyn, and he was using ME to get the biometric key! I couldn't tell you, Daniel! If I told you, he said he’d put a sniper bullet through Lily’s head while she was at preschool!"
Daniel stood frozen, the heavy weight of the revelation crashing down on him.
"That thumb drive," Sarah continued, wiping tears frantically, "it doesn't contain access to the trust. It contains every piece of evidence proving Arthur and Evelyn’s illegal arms deals, murders, and money laundering! I was going to use it to put them BOTH in prison forever!"
Before Daniel could process her words, the steel doors of the shipping container were suddenly torn open by a heavy winch.
Bright halogen floodlights blinded them.
Outside stood a fleet of black SUVs. Dozens of men in black tactical gear surrounded the container, weapons raised. But it wasn't Arthur, and it wasn't Evelyn.
A woman in a sharp grey business suit walked forward through the blinding light, flanked by armed guards.

"Put your weapons down, Mr. Vance," the woman commanded in a razor-sharp tone. "I am Special Agent Vance of the FBI High-Value Financial Crime Task Force. And you, Sarah Sterling, are under arrest for high treason and conspiracy."
Chapter 3 Cliffhanger: Agent Vance stepped closer, pulling off her sunglasses, revealing a face identical to Daniel’s. "And Daniel... stop playing the hero. It's time to tell your 'wife' who you really work for."
