Chapter 2 - Secrets Beneath the Salt

VIRAL HOOK: "The man whose funeral she cried at five years ago was standing right in front of her. But he wasn't there to save her..."
Sarah’s voice trembled, salt water dripping from her matted hair. "F... Father? You're alive?"
Arthur Sterling stepped into the light. He looked nothing like the billionaire tycoon who once graced the covers of Forbes. His face was scarred, his left eye milky white, wrapped in a rugged tactical jacket. Behind him stood three heavily armed men.
Daniel instantly shuffled forward, shielding Sarah and Lily behind his battered body. "Arthur? If you're alive, why have you let Evelyn destroy your family? She just tried to murder us!"
Arthur snorted, a cold, humorless sound. "Destroy my family? Daniel, you fool. Evelyn didn't steal my empire. She’s executing my plan."
Sarah gasped, her heart shattering into a thousand pieces. "What... what are you talking about? She dragged me out here! She tied me up! She tried to drown your granddaughter!"
Arthur looked at little Lily with an expression colder than the ocean water outside. "A necessary casualty. Do you really think a man like me builds a multi-billion-dollar empire through honest work, Sarah? Five years ago, the federal government was days away from freezing all my assets under federal fraud and treason charges. I had to disappear. I faked my death."
"And Evelyn?" Sarah whispered, tears cutting through the salt crust on her cheeks.
"Evelyn was my proxy," Arthur said smoothly. "She spent the last five years liquidating the Sterling assets into offshore accounts. But there was one problem. My late mother left the master offshore trust—worth $4 Billion—strictly to you upon your 25th birthday, which is tomorrow. Evelyn needed you dead so the secondary beneficiary—her—could claim it without triggering an automatic federal audit."
Daniel narrowed his eyes, shifting his weight, preparing to spring despite his broken ribs. "You threw your own daughter to the wolves for money?"
"I built that money!" Arthur snapped, his scarred face twisting with rage. "It belongs to me! And now that you two have miraculously survived the fall, I can't let you ruin five years of meticulous planning."
Arthur pulled a suppressed pistol from his holster and pointed it directly at Daniel's forehead.
"Dad, please!" Sarah sobbed, throwing herself over Daniel. "Take the money! Take the trust! Just let us go! We will disappear, we’ll never come back!"
"You're right, Sarah," Arthur sneered. "You won't come back."
Just as Arthur’s finger tightened on the trigger, a deafening explosion shattered the rock face above the cave entry. Dust, boulders, and debris rained down.
Taking advantage of the sudden chaos, Daniel slammed his shoulder into the guard closest to him, grabbing the man's assault rifle. He fired a burst into the cavern ceiling, causing a secondary cave-in between them and Arthur's crew.
"Run!" Daniel yelled, grabbing Sarah and Lily.
They darted deeper into the treacherous tunnels of the coastal cave system as bullets whizzed through the settling dust behind them. They sprinted blindly into the pitch black, guided only by the distant, echoing roar of underground water.
They reached a steep ledge inside the cave system. Below them was an underground fast-moving river sweeping out toward an unknown exit.
Behind them, heavy footsteps and the clicking of rifle bolts echoed fast.
"They're over here! Kill them all!" Arthur’s voice boomed through the tunnels.
Daniel looked at Sarah. "Trust me?"
Sarah squeezed his hand, her eyes filled with terrifying resolve. "Always."

Together, holding their daughter tightly between them, they jumped into the roaring black water below.
Chapter 2 Cliffhanger: As they floated down the raging subterranean river, Daniel’s phone—sealed inside a waterproof tactical pouch—vibrated. A text message lit up the screen from an unknown number: "Don't trust Sarah. She knew Arthur was alive all along."
