CHAPTER 1 – The Lie That Saved Two Little Girls

The private security room fell silent.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Twenty-four surveillance screens reflected across Emiliano Duarte's frozen face as he watched the woman he planned to marry transform into someone he no longer recognized.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

She wasn't charming.

She wasn't pretending.

The elegant voice that had captivated politicians, celebrities, and billionaires was gone.

Instead...

There stood a woman whose eyes held nothing but irritation.

Martina instinctively stepped behind her older sister.

Daniela quietly wrapped one arm around the little girl without taking her eyes off Patricia.

That tiny movement hit Emiliano harder than any business betrayal he'd ever suffered.

Children don't learn to protect each other overnight.

They learn after surviving the same fear over and over again.

His stomach twisted.

How many times had this happened while he attended board meetings?

How many business trips had become opportunities for someone else to terrorize his daughters?

The answer terrified him.

...

Patricia slowly walked toward the sisters.

"Did your father leave already?"

Daniela nodded carefully.

"Yes."

Patricia smiled.

Not kindly.

Victorious.

"Good."

She glanced toward Rosa.

"You can stop pretending now."

The words confused Emiliano.

Pretending?

Rosa lowered her head politely.

"I'm sorry, Miss Patricia?"

"I said..." Patricia stepped closer until only inches separated them. "...stop acting like their mother."

The room became painfully quiet.

Rosa answered softly.

"I've never tried to replace anyone."

"No?"

Patricia laughed.

"Then why do they run to you every time?"

Neither girl answered.

Patricia suddenly grabbed Daniela's book.

The hardcover slammed against the wall.

Pages exploded across the living room like frightened birds.

Martina gasped.

Daniela flinched—but didn't cry.

That frightened Emiliano even more.

Children cry when something bad happens.

Children who stop crying...

Have already learned it changes nothing.

...

Rosa bent down to gather the torn pages.

"I'm sorry if we've upset you."

Patricia kicked the scattered papers across the floor.

"Don't touch them."

Rosa froze.

"You work for him."

Another step.

"You eat because of him."

Another step.

"You sleep under his roof."

Another.

"So don't ever forget what you are."

Daniela suddenly spoke.

"Please don't yell at Rosa."

Patricia slowly turned.

"What did you say?"

The room froze.

Even Rosa whispered urgently,

"Daniela..."

But the eleven-year-old girl refused to look away.

"I said... don't yell at her."

Patricia smiled.

Then—

SLAP.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

Daniela's face jerked sideways.

Martina screamed.

Inside the surveillance room...

Everything inside Emiliano stopped.

His heartbeat.

His breathing.

His thoughts.

The security chief instinctively reached for the door.

"Sir—"

"No."

Emiliano raised one trembling hand.

"Not yet."

His own voice sounded unfamiliar.

Because he needed to know everything.

Every lie.

Every secret.

Every second his daughters had hidden from him.

He forced himself to keep watching.

And that decision would destroy everything he believed about his own family.

...

Rosa immediately knelt beside Daniela.

"Sweetheart... look at me."

Daniela whispered through trembling lips,

"I'm okay."

No.

She wasn't.

Children who are okay don't comfort adults after being slapped.

They don't apologize for being hurt.

They survive.

Emiliano gripped the desk so hard his knuckles turned white.

Then Patricia quietly leaned close enough that the cameras barely caught her whisper.

"If either of you tells your father..."

She smiled sweetly.

"...Rosa loses her job."

Martina burst into tears.

Daniela hugged her little sister tightly.

Neither of them looked surprised.

Only defeated.

And in that exact moment...

Emiliano realized something horrifying.

His daughters hadn't been afraid of Patricia.

They had been protecting Rosa.

From him.

Because they believed...

Their own father would choose Patricia over the only woman who had ever protected them.

That realization hurt more than anything he had ever experienced.

He had spent billions building companies.

May you like

Yet somehow...

He had lost the trust of the two people he loved most.
