CHAPTER 4 – The Letter Hidden Behind the Painting
Patricia had been in prison for only forty-eight hours when the mansion finally felt quiet again.
For the first time in months, Martina laughed during breakfast.
Daniela smiled without looking over her shoulder.
Rosa was preparing pancakes when Emiliano's head of security entered the dining room carrying a small wooden box.
"Sir... we found this during the investigation."
Emiliano frowned.
"I've never seen it before."
"It was hidden inside the wall behind the painting in your late wife's bedroom."
The room became silent.
His late wife's bedroom had remained untouched since the day she died.
With trembling hands, Emiliano opened the box.
Inside was a single silver key...
A faded photograph...
And a sealed envelope addressed in his wife's handwriting.
"For Emiliano. Open only if something happens to me."
His hands shook as he broke the seal.
The first sentence stole the air from his lungs.
"If you're reading this, someone I trusted has betrayed our family."
His heartbeat accelerated.
The letter continued.
"You think our daughters are in danger because of money.
But money was never the real reason.
Someone has been watching our family long before Patricia ever appeared."
Emiliano stared at Rosa.
"You knew about this?"
She slowly nodded.
"I promised your wife I wouldn't open the box unless you discovered the truth yourself."
He continued reading.
"The person responsible isn't inside this house anymore...
He's inside your company."
At that exact moment...
Emiliano's phone rang.
His chief financial officer was calling.
When he answered...
The terrified voice on the other end shouted,
"Sir... someone just emptied nearly four hundred million dollars from one of your overseas accounts!"
