CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE
Alexei couldn't breathe.
Only one sentence echoed inside his mind.
She survived.
Impossible.
He had watched her disappear into the canyon.
No one could survive that fall.
"No..."
he whispered.
"You're mistaken."
The police officer looked directly into his eyes.
"I wish we were."
Alexei's knees nearly gave way.
He followed the officers onto the station platform while dozens of passengers stared in disbelief.
Whispers spread instantly.
"What's happening?"
"Did someone get arrested?"
"Was there an accident?"
Alexei forced himself to stay calm.
If Marina was alive...
Maybe she hadn't seen him.
Maybe she couldn't remember.

His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of helicopter blades.
Everyone looked toward the canyon.
A rescue helicopter emerged above the cliffs.
Minutes earlier, several experienced rock climbers had been hiking along a narrow trail beneath the railway bridge.
One of them noticed something unbelievable.
A woman.
Alive.
Instead of falling directly into the river, Marina had crashed through the thick branches of an ancient pine tree growing from the cliffside.
The impact shattered several branches, slowing her fall before she landed on a rocky ledge.
She was badly injured.
Barely conscious.
But alive.
When rescuers reached her, she whispered only four words.
"My husband pushed me."
Those words changed everything.
At the station, detectives immediately secured Alexei for questioning.
He insisted it had been an accident.
"She slipped."
"I tried to save her."
"I loved my wife."
But investigators weren't convinced.
While rescue teams worked below, another detective searched the couple's private train compartment.
At first glance, nothing seemed unusual.
Until he discovered a leather briefcase hidden beneath Alexei's seat.
Inside were documents that transformed the investigation.
Copies of Marina's updated will.
Property transfer forms.
Insurance papers worth millions.
And handwritten notes about meetings Alexei had kept secret.
The detective exchanged a silent glance with his partner.
This was becoming far bigger than a tragic fall.
Meanwhile, Marina was rushed to a hospital.
Doctors fought for hours to stabilize her.
Late that night, she finally opened her eyes.
A detective gently asked,
"Can you tell us exactly what happened?"
Marina struggled to speak.
Then she whispered something that stunned everyone in the room.
"You think..."
"...he wanted my money."
She closed her eyes for a moment.
Then continued.
"But he never knew..."
"...the property wasn't actually mine anymore."
The detective leaned forward.
"What do you mean?"
A faint smile appeared despite her pain.
"Three weeks ago..."
"...I transferred everything into a confidential family trust."
She took another slow breath.
"And there's one more thing..."
"The trust activates automatically if someone tries to cause my death."
Silence filled the room.
"What happens then?" the detective asked.
Marina looked toward the window.
"My husband thinks he destroyed my future."
She slowly turned back.
"He has no idea..."
"...he just destroyed his own."
Outside the hospital, Alexei's lawyer arrived, convinced he could still save his wealthy client.
