🔥 CHAPTER 8 — THE TRAP THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Rain poured relentlessly as dozens of police vehicles surrounded the abandoned warehouse.
Searchlights swept across the old building.
Everything looked deserted.
Too deserted.
Detective Leonov raised his hand.
"Move carefully."
The tactical team entered through three different doors.
Empty offices.
Broken machinery.
Dust everywhere.
Nothing.
Then one officer shouted from the basement.
"Detective! You need to see this!"
Hidden beneath a rusted metal floor was a sophisticated underground room.
Rows of computers.
Stacks of financial records.
Fake passports.
Hard drives.
Millions of dollars in cash.
It wasn't just a hiding place.
It was the headquarters of an enormous money-laundering operation.
Before investigators could celebrate—
The lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness.
A loud metallic crash echoed through the tunnels.
Then came the first explosion.
Smoke filled the underground rooms.
Emergency alarms screamed.
Someone had activated a self-destruct system.
"Everybody out!" Leonov shouted.
Officers rushed toward the exits as flames spread through the building.
Just as Leonov reached the staircase, he heard a weak voice behind him.
"Help..."
He turned.
A young accountant was trapped beneath a collapsed steel beam.
Without hesitation, Leonov ran back through the smoke.
Together with two officers, he pulled the injured man free seconds before another explosion tore through the tunnel.
The warehouse collapsed behind them.
Firefighters battled the flames until sunrise.
Although much of the building had been destroyed, investigators recovered several protected hard drives from a fireproof vault.
The evidence was extraordinary.
Bank records connected dozens of shell companies.
Encrypted files listed powerful clients.
Hidden ledgers documented years of financial crimes.
One final folder caught Leonov's attention.
Its title was simple.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Inside were photographs of Marina.
Copies of her passport.
Maps of the railway bridge.
Insurance documents.
Detailed surveillance reports stretching back almost three years.
Marina hadn't been chosen at random.
She had been targeted long before Alexei fell into debt.
As Leonov closed the folder, another officer approached.
"We've identified the accountant you rescued."
"Who is he?"
"He handled Antonov's private records."
"Will he testify?"
The officer nodded slowly.
"He says he'll tell us everything."
Leonov allowed himself the first hopeful smile in weeks.
Maybe this nightmare was finally coming to an end.
But hundreds of miles away, inside a private jet preparing for takeoff, Sergei Antonov watched the morning news on a tablet.
He calmly switched off the screen.
Then he looked at the woman sitting across from him.
She had remained hidden from the investigation all this time.
Antonov smiled faintly.
"They think they've won."
The woman returned the smile.
"They don't even know Phase Two has already begun."
The jet accelerated down the runway.
As it disappeared into the clouds, Detective Leonov's phone vibrated with an urgent new alert.
May you like
"Marina Volkov has disappeared."
The hunt was far from over.
