🔥 CHAPTER 7 — THE FACE FROM THE WEDDING

Detective Leonov didn't sleep that night.

Marina's final words echoed in his mind over and over.

"I've heard that voice before... It was at my wedding."

The next morning, investigators reopened every piece of evidence connected to Marina and Alexei's marriage.

Thousands of wedding photographs.

Hours of video recordings.

Guest lists.

Security logs.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until a young forensic analyst paused one of the videos.

"Wait..."

She enlarged the image.

Standing near the back of the ballroom was a man in a perfectly tailored black suit.

He never danced.

He never smiled.

He barely spoke to anyone.

Yet every few minutes, Alexei quietly walked over to him.

The two exchanged short conversations before separating again.

"Who is he?" Leonov asked.

No one knew.

His name wasn't on the guest list.

Facial-recognition software quickly produced a match.

The room fell silent.

Sergei Antonov.

The same businessman investigators believed had laundered the missing millions.

He hadn't simply entered Marina's life after the marriage.

He had been watching from the very beginning.

Meanwhile, another discovery changed everything.

Investigators recovered deleted messages from Alexei's encrypted phone.

One message, sent nearly a year before the train incident, read:

"If she refuses to sign, we'll find another solution."

Another followed weeks later:

"Accidents happen every day. Just make sure no one connects them to us."

The final message was sent only hours before the train departed.

"Today ends your debt. Don't fail again."

Alexei hadn't planned the crime alone.

He had been taking orders.

Detective Leonov immediately drove to the prison.

Alexei looked exhausted.

The confident businessman was gone.

In his place sat a frightened man who finally understood he had been used.

Leonov placed copies of the messages on the table.

"You still want to protect Antonov?"

Alexei stared at the papers for several minutes.

Then his shoulders collapsed.

"He promised everything would disappear."

"What did he promise?"

"My debts..."

"My criminal charges..."

"My life."

"And what did he ask for in return?"

Alexei closed his eyes.

"Marina."

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Finally Alexei whispered,

"I thought I was making the decision."

"I didn't realize..."

"...I was just another pawn."

That afternoon, Alexei signed a full confession, revealing secret meeting places, hidden accounts, and the names of several people working for Antonov.

The investigation exploded overnight.

Police launched coordinated raids across the city.

Luxury offices were searched.

Computers were seized.

Several executives were arrested.

News channels interrupted their broadcasts with breaking updates.

But Antonov himself...

Had vanished.

No passport records.

No flights.

No border crossings.

It was as if he had disappeared into thin air.

Late that evening, Detective Leonov received a call.

A fisherman living near an abandoned lakeside warehouse had reported suspicious activity.

Several expensive vehicles had arrived after midnight.

The location matched one of the addresses Alexei had confessed to.

Leonov immediately assembled a tactical team.

No one realized they were driving straight into a carefully prepared trap.
