CHAPTER 4 — The Black File

Emily drove Daniel through the city in silence.

She didn’t take him to the hospital.

She took him to an abandoned church on the edge of Brooklyn.

Inside, behind a cracked altar, Daniel pulled loose a brick from the wall.

Emily watched as he removed a rusted metal box.

Inside was a black flash drive, an old photo, and a letter sealed with Michael Harrington Sr.’s signature.

Emily’s hands shook.

“What is this?”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The truth your family buried.”

Twenty years ago, Michael’s father had discovered that Harrington Global was secretly selling military medical technology to enemies overseas.

When he tried to expose the board, Victor Kane arranged the ambush that destroyed Daniel’s unit.

But Daniel had survived.

Barely.

And Michael’s father gave him one final order:

Protect the evidence.

Protect Michael.

Then vanish.

Emily opened the letter.

The first line made her knees weaken.

Suddenly, the church doors slammed open.

Armed men entered.

Victor Kane stepped between them, smiling like a man who had already won.

“Daniel Ross,” he said softly.

“Twenty years of hiding... and you came back for a billionaire who doesn’t even remember what his father did.”

Daniel moved in front of Emily.

Victor raised his gun.

“Give me the file.”

Daniel smiled for the first time.

“You really think I kept only one copy?”

At that moment, every phone in the city lit up.

A live broadcast began from Michael Harrington’s verified account.

The black file was no longer hidden.
