CHAPTER 7 — The Funeral of a Traitor

Victor Kane's funeral was unlike any other.

There were no tears.

No heartfelt speeches.

Only powerful men in black suits watching one another with quiet suspicion.

Politicians.

Military officials.

Corporate executives.

Every one of them wondered the same thing.

Who killed Victor Kane?

Across the street, Daniel Ross stood unnoticed beneath a baseball cap and dark sunglasses.

Emily Harrington joined him.

"You think the sniper will come?"

Daniel never looked away from the cemetery.

"No."

"He already has."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel nodded toward the mourners.

"They're not here to bury Victor."

"They're here to find out who knows the truth."

At that moment, Michael Harrington arrived.

The crowd parted respectfully as the billionaire approached the coffin.

Instead of placing flowers...

He dropped Victor's company ID badge onto the casket.

"This belongs to the past."

The cameras flashed wildly.

But Daniel wasn't watching Michael.

His eyes locked onto an elderly veteran standing alone beneath an oak tree.

The old man wore a faded military pin that no civilian should have recognized.

Daniel's breathing stopped.

It was the insignia of Shadow Unit Seven—his classified rescue team.

The veteran caught Daniel's eye...

Then subtly tapped his own wrist twice.

The team's old emergency signal.

Danger. You're being watched.

Before Daniel could move—

The old veteran collapsed.

People screamed.

Doctors rushed over.

Natural heart attack...

Or so everyone believed.

But Daniel reached the body first.

Hidden inside the old man's jacket was a tiny voice recorder.

One sentence had already been recorded.

"Don't trust Michael's security chief..."

The recording ended with gunfire.

Daniel looked toward Michael's convoy.

Standing beside the limousine was Michael's trusted security chief...

Ryan Cole.

The same man who had personally escorted Michael everywhere for the last fifteen years.

Ryan noticed Daniel watching him.

He smiled.

Then slowly raised two fingers to his temple.

A military salute.

The exact salute only members of Shadow Unit Seven had ever used.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

May you like

The traitor had been beside Michael...

Every single day.
