Chapter 5 - The Financial Traps ExposedThree days after the arrests, the story exploded across Guadalajara’s local news outlets and viral social media channels.

The headlines were vicious: "FAKE FIANCÉ EXPOSED: Woman Traps Extortion Network in Guadalajara Apartment." "MOM-IN-LAW FROM HELL: Tried to Rob Daughter-In-Law’s Payroll, Ends Up in Federal Prison."

Renata sat in the office of her attorney, Licenciada Sofia Morales, reviewing the legal mess left behind by the Salgados.

"It's worse than we thought, Renata," Sofia said, sliding a thick stack of bank statements across the desk. "Ofelia didn't just owe money to Héctor Prado. She had opened three different fraudulent lines of credit in your name using stolen personal data she found in Mauricio's phone."

Renata’s eyes narrowed. "She had my curp and tax ID?"

"Yes," Sofia nodded. "Mauricio took photos of your official documents while you were in the shower two weeks ago. Ofelia submitted them online to secondary loan sharks. Total liabilities: over 1.8 million pesos."

Renata felt a surge of cold anger, but she remained completely poised. "Can we prove forgery?"

"Easily," Sofia smiled. "The digital IP addresses trace back directly to Ofelia’s home router. Plus, Captain Vargas’s team seized Prado’s ledgers during the raid. His books contain full details of the kickback agreement between him and Ofelia. They were planning to force you into a legal debt-assumption agreement immediately after the civil wedding."

"And what about Mauricio?" Renata asked.

"Mauricio is in deep trouble," Sofia said with a chuckle. "He claims he was an innocent victim, but we found text messages between him and his mother from last month. He was explicitly promised a 20% cut of your salary every month as an 'allowance' if he kept you under control."

Renata leaned back in her chair, a dark, calculating smile appearing on her face.

"They thought they were going to drain me," Renata said quietly. "Now, I'm going to take everything they have left."

"What are you thinking?" Sofia asked, intrigued.

"Ofelia owns a two-story house in the Providencia district—the house she inherited from Mauricio’s father," Renata explained. "Mauricio holds a 50% legal share of that property. I want you to file an emergency freeze on all their real estate assets today. We are filing a civil suit for fraud, identity theft, emotional distress, and physical assault."

Sofia’s eyes lit up. "If we win the civil suit—which is guaranteed with the police video footage—we can force a court-ordered auction of that Providencia property to cover your damages and legal fees."

"Do it," Renata said without hesitation. "Leave them without a single brick to their name."

That afternoon, Renata returned to her apartment. The broken tiles had been replaced, the red pozole stains scrubbed away. The home was quiet, clean, and entirely hers.

She walked over to her desk, opened her laptop, and logged into her secure bank account.

She didn't just have savings from her job at the sports center. For five years, Renata had been running a private security consultation firm under an umbrella LLC registered in Panama. Her true net worth was nearly three times what she had ever let Mauricio see.

She had purposely presented herself as an ordinary, middle-income woman to test Mauricio’s character before marriage.

And he had failed the test in the most pathetic way possible.

Suddenly, her phone chimed. It was a message from an unknown number.

She clicked it open. It was a video file sent from inside the Jalisco Women's Correctional Facility.

Renata hit play.
