CHAPTER 2 – THE SECRET HIDDEN INSIDE THE CABIN

The forest became eerily quiet.
Even the birds stopped singing.
The German Shepherd stood perfectly still, ears raised, eyes locked on the moving bushes.
Then a man wearing dirty clothes stumbled out, gripping a hunting knife.
His face was covered in scratches.
His eyes looked completely unhinged.
"There you are..." he whispered, staring directly at Lily.
Carter immediately stepped between them.
"Stay back."
The stranger laughed.
"You have no idea what that dog is protecting."
Before anyone could react, the German Shepherd lunged—not to attack wildly, but to pin the stranger to the ground with incredible precision.
The knife flew several feet away.
Within seconds, police sirens echoed through the forest.
Officers rushed in and arrested the man.
What they discovered next shocked the entire town.
The stranger had kidnapped children for years, hiding inside the abandoned cabin. Lily had accidentally wandered near the property while looking for wildflowers.
The German Shepherd wasn't the criminal's pet.
He had once belonged to a police K-9 officer who disappeared during an investigation months earlier.
Even after losing his handler, the loyal dog had stayed near the cabin every single day...
Watching.
Waiting.
Protecting anyone who came too close.
When officers searched the cabin, they uncovered hidden rooms beneath the floorboards containing evidence that solved multiple missing-person cases.
Everyone called the German Shepherd a hero.
But the biggest surprise came later that evening.
As an officer gently scanned the dog's old collar, a damaged metal tag revealed a faded name.
MAX.
The same K-9 officially declared dead six months ago.
Yet somehow...
Max had survived alone in the wilderness, guarding one final secret left behind by his missing partner.
And inside the cabin, investigators found a bloodstained notebook with one sentence written on the final page:
"If Max ever brings someone here... trust the dog, not the people."
No one knew who had written it.
But every detective understood one terrifying truth.

It was only beginning.
