CHAPTER 6 – THE MAN EVERYONE TRUSTED

That night, the evidence convoy left the forest under heavy police escort.
Three armored vehicles.
Twelve federal agents.
No one believed anyone could stop them.
Twenty miles from the city...
The lead truck exploded.
A wall of fire swallowed the highway.
Masked gunmen emerged from the darkness, firing without hesitation.
Their target wasn't the money.
It wasn't the hard drives.
It was the black notebook.
Inside the second vehicle, Carter held the evidence case tightly while Max growled beside him.
Suddenly, one of the attackers shouted:
"Leave the dog alive!"
Carter froze.
Why would criminals risk everything... just to keep Max alive?
Then he remembered.
Max had worn a police body camera on his final mission.
No one had ever recovered it.
The attackers believed the camera was still hidden somewhere on the dog.
As bullets shattered the windows, Max suddenly bolted into the woods.
Every gunman chased after him.
Exactly as the loyal K-9 had intended.
While the attackers disappeared into the darkness, Carter escaped with the notebook.
Hours later, agents searched Max from head to tail.
No camera.
No memory card.
Nothing.
Daniel smiled weakly from his hospital bed.
"They're looking in the wrong place."
Everyone stared at him.
"The camera isn't on Max..."
"It has been hidden somewhere no one would ever think to search."
Just then, Lily quietly reached into the pocket of the jacket she had been wearing since the day Max saved her.
Her fingers touched something small.
Cold.
Metal.
She slowly pulled out a tiny waterproof memory card.
Max had slipped it into her pocket the moment he first hugged her in the forest.
The little girl had unknowingly carried the most valuable evidence in America.
And when investigators opened the file...

The very first face on the screen belonged to someone no one expected.
The Director of the FBI.
