CHAPTER 5 — The Night Someone Tried to Steal Her Baby

A violent thunderstorm covered Chicago.
Rain battered the hospital windows.
Lightning briefly illuminated the maternity floor.
Most patients were asleep.
Claire wasn't.
Something felt wrong.
At exactly 2:17 a.m., she heard soft footsteps outside her room.
Not nurses.
Too slow.
Too careful.
The door opened barely three inches.
A woman wearing hospital scrubs stepped inside.
Face mask.
Hair cap.
Medical gloves.
She carried a clipboard.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
Claire frowned.
"Yes?"
"We need another ultrasound."
Now.
At two in the morning.
Without Dr. Foster.
Claire instantly knew.
This wasn't normal.
She quietly pressed the emergency call button hidden beneath her blanket.
The woman smiled.
"There's no need for that."
She reached into her pocket.
Not for medical equipment.
For a syringe.
Claire's blood turned cold.
Before the woman could move another step—
The bathroom door exploded open.
Two private security officers tackled the fake nurse to the floor.
The syringe slid across the tiles.
Inside it was a powerful sedative.
The attacker screamed.
"Let me go!"
Within seconds, hospital security flooded the hallway.
Police arrived minutes later.
During questioning, investigators discovered the woman wasn't a nurse at all.
She had never worked in healthcare.
She was a former private investigator.
Someone had paid her fifty thousand dollars.
Her assignment was chillingly simple.
Sedate Claire.
Transport her to another private clinic.
Delay the birth.
Long enough for emergency custody paperwork to be filed.
When detectives asked who hired her...
She stayed silent.
Until they showed her surveillance footage.
Then she whispered one name.
"Sabrina."
Claire closed her eyes.
She had expected betrayal.
She hadn't expected an attempt to steal her unborn child.
Dr. Melanie Foster squeezed her hand.
"It failed."
"But they're getting desperate."
Claire looked through the rain-covered window.
"No."
