CHAPTER 7 — Grant Thought the Worst Was Over… Until His Own Mother Asked to Testify

The courtroom buzzed with whispers after Oliver's testimony.
Grant sat motionless at the defense table, his hands trembling for the first time since the trial began.
His attorneys leaned toward him.
"We need a recess."
"We need damage control."
Grant barely heard them.
He couldn't stop staring at the courtroom doors.
Because another witness had just arrived.
Marjorie Waverly.
His mother.
The elegant woman who had spent decades protecting the Waverly family name walked toward the witness stand wearing a simple black suit instead of her usual designer gowns.
No diamonds.
No pearls.
No family crest.
Just quiet determination.
Grant's face hardened.
"Mother..."
She didn't even acknowledge him.
After taking the oath, the prosecutor asked one simple question.
"Mrs. Waverly, why have you decided to testify today?"
Marjorie took a long breath.
"Because I buried my conscience long enough."
The courtroom fell silent.
"For thirty years I watched powerful men destroy women while calling it business."
"I watched my husband do it."
"Then I watched my son become exactly like him."
Grant shot to his feet.
"She's emotional!"
"She's eighty years old!"
"She's confused!"
Judge Eleanor Brooks slammed her gavel.
"Sit down, Mr. Waverly."
Marjorie calmly opened a leather binder.
Inside were handwritten journals dating back nearly three decades.
Every page documented secret meetings.
Illegal payments.
Threats against employees.
Affairs hidden with company money.
Even worse...
One page described a conversation from years earlier.
Grant had once said, laughing over dinner,
"A wife is easier to replace than a business partner."
Claire lowered her eyes.
She remembered that dinner.
She had laughed awkwardly, believing it was only a terrible joke.
It hadn't been.
Marjorie looked directly at Claire.
"I'm sorry."
"I should have warned you before you married him."
Tears filled Claire's eyes.
For the first time in years, someone from the Waverly family had chosen truth over blood.
Then Marjorie reached into her purse.
"I have one last piece of evidence."
She handed the prosecutor a sealed envelope.
"It contains Grant's handwritten contingency plan."
"What contingency plan?" the prosecutor asked.
Marjorie's voice barely rose above a whisper.
"The plan he wrote in case Claire or the baby became... inconvenient."
The courtroom exploded with gasps.
Grant's face turned ghost white.
Even his own attorneys looked horrified.
The envelope was opened.
Inside...
was a signed notebook outlining how to isolate Claire after childbirth, control her finances, restrict her visitors, and force her to sign away the remaining assets while claiming she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.
The final line froze the courtroom.
"If she refuses, remove her permanently before she remembers what belongs to her."
No one spoke.
Even the judge needed several seconds before continuing.

The courtroom had stopped seeing Grant Waverly as a disgraced CEO.
They now saw him as something far more dangerous.
