CHAPTER 6 — Sabrina Thought She Had Erased Every Secret… Until One Child Walked Into Court

Two weeks later...
Federal Court.
Chicago.
Every seat was filled before sunrise.
News helicopters circled overhead.
The trial of Grant Waverly had become the biggest corporate scandal of the decade.
Grant entered wearing an expensive gray suit instead of prison clothing.
He still smiled for the cameras.
Still believed he could win.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Claire entered slowly.
Nine months pregnant.
Wearing a simple navy-blue maternity dress.
No jewelry.
No makeup beyond what was necessary.
She looked nothing like the frightened woman from the birthday party.
She looked fearless.
Judge Eleanor Brooks called the proceedings to order.
Witnesses testified for hours.
Financial analysts.
Forensic accountants.
Former executives.
Everything pointed toward fraud.
Then came the surprise witness.
A small boy.
About ten years old.
Curly brown hair.
Oversized blazer.
Holding a stuffed dinosaur.
The courtroom whispered in confusion.
Judge Brooks looked over her glasses.
"Young man, please tell the court your name."
"Oliver Hale."
Sabrina's face instantly lost all color.
Oliver looked toward her.
Then toward Claire.
Then at the judge.
"My mom told me never to say anything."
Silence filled the room.
"But Grandma said lying is worse."
He reached into his backpack.
Everyone leaned forward.
He removed an old tablet computer.
Cracked screen.
Blue protective case.
"My mom forgot this at home."
The prosecutor connected it to the courtroom monitors.
Thousands of deleted messages appeared.
Voice recordings.
Photos.
Calendar reminders.
Hidden backups.
One audio file began playing.
Sabrina's unmistakable voice echoed through the courtroom.
"Once Claire gives birth, she'll never be strong enough to fight us."
Grant laughed in the recording.
"Exactly."
"The baby guarantees she loses."
The courtroom erupted.
Reporters stood.
Jurors stared in disbelief.
Grant slowly turned toward Sabrina.
"You kept that?"
She looked horrified.
"I thought I deleted everything."
Oliver quietly whispered,
"My tablet saves everything to the cloud."
The judge struck the gavel repeatedly.
"Order!"
"Order!"
Grant closed his eyes.
For the first time since the trial began...
He finally realized the truth.
The evidence that would destroy him hadn't come from investigators.
It hadn't come from Claire.
It had come from the one witness nobody had noticed.
May you like
A ten-year-old boy...
...who simply told the truth.
