Chapter 18 - The Shadow in the Alps

High in the isolated peaks of the Swiss Alps, the elite boarding academy stood like a fortress of glass and white stone against the jagged mountain backdrop. Inside the secure compound, little Lily sat at a mahogany desk in her private suite, peacefully coloring in a sketchpad with a fresh box of Crayola crayons.
A gentle knock echoed at her door.
Lily looked up, her bright eyes shining with innocent curiosity. "Come in?"
The heavy oak door slowly opened, and Katarina stepped into the room. Her tailored coat was damp from the mountain snow, her face framed by a triumphant, emotional smile as she knelt down before her daughter.
"Lily, my sweet girl," Katarina whispered softly, opening her arms wide. "It's over. Mommy is back. We never have to hide again."
Lily blinked, lowering her red crayon. She didn't run into her mother's arms. Instead, she tilted her head with an unnerving, absolute stillness that didn't belong to a three-year-old child.
"You took too long, Mommy," Lily said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, mechanical calm.
Katarina froze, her smile faltering for a fraction of a second. "What did you say, sweetie?"

Before Katarina could stand up, the heavy oak door swung completely open behind her. A dozen armed tactical guards poured into the room, their weapons raised and locked squarely on Katarina’s chest.
And stepping calmly through the center of the guards, brushing a speck of ash from his charcoal-black suit, was Dante Moretti.
