Chapter 19 - The Final Checkmate

Katarina spun around, the blood draining entirely from her face as she stared at the man she had just blown to pieces in Milan less than two hours ago.

"D-Dante...?" she stammered, stumbling backward until her spine hit the mahogany desk. "That’s... that’s impossible. You were in the vault!"

Dante walked slowly toward her, his dark eyes like shards of winter ice. He stopped just two feet away, towering over her with terrifying composure.

"Rule number one of the underworld, Katarina," Dante said quietly, his voice like the edge of a razor. "Never trust a security blueprint designed by the man who built the empire."

Katarina’s breath hitched in her throat as she realized the horrifying truth. The Milan archive was never a real stronghold; it had been an abandoned decoy facility outfitted with controlled demolition charges specifically designed to fake a catastrophic collapse—a trap designed to draw the ghost out into the open.

"You knew," Katarina whispered, her voice trembling with sudden, crushing despair. "From the very beginning... you knew who I was."

"I knew the moment your hospital debt was cleared by a dead syndicate's shell company," Dante replied coldly. "A ghost can run, Katarina, but a ghost leaves footprints. And you left mine all over the driveway."

Katarina let out a hollow, defeated laugh, sliding down the side of the desk until she sat on the cold wooden floor, her grand conspiracy completely shattered into dust.

Dante turned his gaze toward little Lily, who calmly picked up her red crayon and went back to coloring her drawing of a black sedan and a tall man standing in the snow.

Dante reached down, gently patting the child’s head, before turning his back on Katarina as his elite guards moved in to secure her for good. The war was over, the throne was secure, and in the dark world of the Moretti empire, the silence reigned supreme once again.
