Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

The warehouse fell into a tense, deadly stillness. Salvatore’s men were disarmed and forced to their knees on the concrete floor. Salvatore himself stood alone, his pistol lowered, realizing he had walked straight into a masterclass execution trap.

Dante walked slowly toward Claire, who was backed against the wall, trembling uncontrollably as her elaborate double-cross completely unraveled.

"Please," Claire whispered, her facade completely shattered, tears streaming down her face. "Do whatever you want to me, just... let Lily go. She's innocent. She didn't know anything about any of this."

Dante stopped right in front of her. He looked down at the sleeping child on the sofa, then back into Claire’s terrified eyes.

"She is innocent," Dante said quietly. "Which is why she will be placed in a secure, loving home far away from the blood and bullets of this city—under a new name, with a trust fund large enough to last ten lifetimes, funded entirely from your liquidated syndicate accounts."

Claire gasped, her knees buckling beneath her. "Thank you... oh god, thank you..."

"Don't thank me yet," Dante whispered, his voice turning to ice. "Because while Lily survives, you, Claire, are going to spend the rest of your natural life in the deepest, darkest black-site prison beneath this city, reflecting on what happens when you try to play chess against a grandmaster."

Dante gestured with two fingers. Four elite guards stepped forward, grabbing Claire by the arms and hauling her away into the subterranean shadows as she screamed out in despair.

Salvatore was dragged away next, his face pale with defeat.

The warehouse emptied rapidly, leaving only Dante standing alone in the center of the vast, quiet room. He walked over to the sofa where little Lily was still sleeping peacefully, clutching her red crayon in her tiny fist.
