Chapter 4 - The Breach

Chaos erupted across the Moretti estate. Automatic gunfire echoed through the grand hallways as masked mercenaries poured through the shattered stained-glass windows. Dante’s loyal guards fought back fiercely, turning the opulent marble corridors into a brutal urban combat zone. Gunpowder and smoke filled the air.

Down in the subterranean vault, Claire woke with a start. The violent shaking of the explosion had knocked dust and debris from the ceiling. Lily began to cry, clinging desperately to her mother’s neck.

"Mommy, what’s that loud noise?" Lily sobbed.

"It's okay, baby, it's just thunder," Claire lied frantically, her heart hammering against her ribs. She tried the heavy steel door, but it was magnetically locked from the outside. The power grid had failed, plunging the hallway into flickering emergency red light. "Hold onto me tight, Lily. Don't let go."

Heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete stairs. They weren't Dante’s rhythmic, heavy strides. These steps were rushed, heavy-booted, and chaotic.

A figure stopped outside the reinforced glass viewing slit of the cell. Through the dim red glow, Claire recognized the face. It wasn't one of Dante’s men. It was Viktor Vance, the ruthless executioner of the Russian Syndicate.

Viktor smiled wickedly, pressing a shaped explosive charge directly against the electronic locking mechanism of the vault door.

"Open up, little bird," Viktor muttered in a raspy, scarred voice. "The boss wants to tie up some loose ends."

Claire backed away, shielding Lily with her own body. She looked around the barren room desperately for any weapon, any escape. There was nothing. Just concrete, an iron cot, and a single red crayon that Lily had dropped earlier, still clutched tightly in her tiny hand.

The explosive detonated with a deafening roar. The steel door buckled inward, screeching on its hinges, and blasted off its frame, filling the room with thick, choking smoke.
