CHAPTER 1 — The Man Everyone Pretended Not to See

Every morning before sunrise, while the city still slept beneath its blanket of silence, an old man pushed a rusty shopping cart through the back alleys of downtown Chicago.

People knew him only as "The Trash Man."

No one knew his real name.

No one cared.

His beard had turned completely white, his clothes were torn beyond repair, and his worn-out shoes had so many holes that rainwater soaked through within seconds.

The restaurants behind the expensive hotels threw away enough food every night to feed dozens of families.

That was where he survived.

He waited patiently until employees dumped black garbage bags beside the dumpsters.

Only then would he quietly approach.

Never begging.

Never stealing.

Just hoping someone had thrown away food before it spoiled completely.

Every time he opened another trash bag, he whispered the same words.

"Please... just enough for today."

Customers walking past covered their noses.

Children pointed and laughed.

Businessmen complained.

"Why doesn't someone remove him?"

"He's ruining the neighborhood."

"He belongs in a shelter."

Nobody asked why an elderly man had been forced to search through garbage just to stay alive.

Because nobody wanted the answer.

One freezing afternoon, as snow began falling across the streets, the old man found only moldy bread and rotten fruit.

His hands trembled from hunger.

He hadn't eaten for nearly two days.

As he slowly picked up a half-eaten sandwich from inside a trash can...

A luxury SUV suddenly stopped nearby.

Several well-dressed people stepped out.

One of them noticed him.

Instead of helping...

He laughed.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

He pulled out his phone.

"Look at this."

The others burst into laughter.

"Perfect."

"Post it online."

"Caption it: 'When hard work doesn't pay.'"

Another man kicked the old shopping cart.

The cans rolled across the sidewalk.

The little food he had collected scattered into dirty snow.

The crowd laughed even louder.

The old man knelt down without saying a word.

Slowly...

Quietly...

He began picking up every single crumb.

Not because he had no pride.

Because hunger is stronger than pride.

Across the street...

A little girl wearing a bright yellow coat stopped walking.

She had been holding her mother's hand.

Now she refused to move.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Mom..."

"Why is that grandpa eating from the trash?"

Her mother looked away.

"Don't stare, sweetheart."

But the girl kept watching.

Something inside her tiny heart refused to let her walk away.

May you like

And in less than five minutes...

She would do something that no adult standing there had the courage to do.
