CHAPTER 8 — The Secret That Destroyed an Empire

That evening, Samuel told the truth he had hidden for forty years.

The explosion had been planned.

Not to collect insurance.

Not because of faulty equipment.

It had been an attempted murder.

Richard had been the target.

Samuel had discovered financial crimes committed by one of Harrison Construction's original investors.

The man feared Richard would expose everything.

So he hired criminals to eliminate both founders.

Samuel survived with severe burns but was secretly taken overseas under a false identity by people trying to protect him.

Everyone believed he had died.

Richard listened in stunned silence.

"But who?"

Samuel slowly placed an old photograph on the table.

Standing beside young Richard...

Was a smiling businessman.

Emma looked at the picture.

"Who's that?"

Richard's face turned pale.

"He was..."

"My father-in-law."

The room fell completely silent.

Richard suddenly realized the horrifying truth.

Victoria hadn't become greedy by herself.

She had grown up under the influence of a man who had spent decades manipulating everyone around him.

The conspiracy that destroyed Richard's life hadn't started ten years ago.

It had started forty years earlier.

Samuel then handed Richard a faded notebook.

Inside were handwritten names...

Secret bank accounts...

Payments to corrupt officials...

And signed confessions from men who had participated in the cover-up before dying.

Richard whispered,

"My entire life..."

"Was built on lies."

Samuel nodded.

"But now..."

"You finally know who your real enemies were."

Outside the window, black SUVs quietly stopped across the street.

Someone else knew Samuel had returned.

And they weren't coming to apologize.
