Chapter 10 - Dawn at the MotelThe morning air was damp and biting as a pair of unmarked federal black SUVs pulled silently into the gravel parking lot of the Route 9 Motor Lodge.

Inside Room 14, Grant Whitmore lay fully clothed across the sagging mattress, staring up at the water-stained ceiling. He hadn't slept in days. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Claire’s cold, resolute face staring back at him from the hallway security camera, holding the key to his destruction.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The heavy pounding shook the hollow wooden door of the motel room.
Grant didn’t move. He assumed it was the motel manager demanding overdue rent, or perhaps a bill collector tracking down his last remaining debts.
"Go away!" Grant shouted hoarsely, his voice cracking from lack of water.
The door didn't open. Instead, a sharp, authoritative voice boomed through the thin wood:
"FBI! Open the door immediately, Mr. Whitmore! You are under arrest for corporate fraud, wire embezzlement, and federal tax evasion!"
Grant’s breath hitched. His heart stopped beating for a terrifying second.
FBI.
He scrambled off the bed, stumbling over his own shoes as he rushed toward the bathroom window. But before he could even turn the latch, the front door was kicked off its hinges with a deafening crash.
Heavy boots thudded across the linoleum floor. Strong, rough hands grabbed Grant by the shoulders, spinning him around and slamming him hard against the cold, bare wall.
Cold steel clicked sharply around his wrists as handcuffs snapped into place.
As federal agents pushed him face-down toward the shattered doorway, Grant caught a brief reflection of himself in the cracked bathroom mirror. His designer suit was torn and stained, his hair was wild, and his eyes were hollow with sheer, unadulterated terror.

He was no longer Grant Whitmore, the untouchable real-estate billionaire of Greenwich.
He was just another prisoner in a system he had spent his entire life trying to cheat.
