Chapter 14 - Shadows Behind BarsBack in the grim, fluorescent-lit reality of the maximum-security federal facility upstate, Grant Whitmore sat at a bolted-down stainless steel table in the communal mess hall.

His designer suits were a distant memory, replaced by coarse orange cotton stamped with Department of Corrections lettering. His hair was completely gray, his face etched with permanent lines of bitterness and exhaustion.

The other inmates kept their distance. In prison, a disgraced corporate white-collar criminal who had lost twenty-six million dollars and his entire family was bottom-tier currency—useless, friendless, and forgotten.

Grant picked at his bland institutional meal with a plastic spork, his mind replaying the past. He realized the most agonizing truth wasn't that he had lost his money, his cars, or his status.

It was that he had done it to himself.

Every lie he told, every late night with fake excuses, every expensive gift used to silence his wife’s intuition—it had all been bricks in the prison cell he now inhabited. He had trained Claire to be observant, cautious, and ruthless by forcing her to survive his deception.

A heavy hand slammed down on the table opposite him.

Grant flinched, looking up. Standing over him was a massive, scarred inmate known for shaking down new arrivals.

"Hey, Whitmore," the inmate growled, his voice a gravelly rasp. "I hear you used to be a big-shot real estate guy. Time to pay up for your protection on this cellblock. Hand over whatever canteen credits you got left."

Grant stared blankly up at the man. For a fleeting second, the old arrogant Grant—the CEO who commanded boardrooms and intimidated executives—tried to flare up inside him.

He opened his mouth to snap back, to threaten legal consequences, to flash a dominant smile.

Then reality crashed down like a falling anvil. He had no lawyers. He had no leverage. He had nothing.

Slowly, humiliatingly, Grant lowered his eyes, pushed his meager ticket of canteen credits across the scarred metal table, and said nothing.

The inmate snorted, snatched the tickets, and walked away.

Grant buried his face in his calloused hands, the cold realization settling deep into his bones: he was entirely, permanently powerless.
