Chapter 8 - The Mediterranean MirageTen thousand miles away from the bleak concrete of Manhattan, the sun beat down warm and golden on the Amalfi Coast.

The cliffside villa rented under an anonymous corporate shell company overlooked miles of glittering turquoise water. Lemon trees lined the terraced gardens, and the gentle sound of waves drifted lazily through the open French doors of the nursery.

Inside, the room was painted a soft, calming ivory.

Claire stood by the crib, her fingers gently brushing against the soft cotton blanket where her newborn daughter, Maia, lay fast asleep. Maia had her father’s striking dark eyelashes, but her expression—even in slumber—was peaceful, untroubled by the chaos left half a world away.

Footsteps clicked lightly against the polished stone floor. Natalie walked in, holding two steaming mugs of Italian espresso, her designer sunglasses pushed up into her hair. She looked entirely different without the heavy New York party makeup—softer, more natural, and genuinely happy.

"The wire transfer from the liquidation of the Tribeca penthouse cleared this morning," Natalie said, handing a mug to Claire with a bright smile. "Accountant says our offshore portfolio is officially fully secure and diversified. We are officially set for life, Boss."

Claire took the mug, inhaling the rich aroma before taking a sip. A quiet, victorious smile touched the corners of her lips.

"Good," Claire murmured, gazing down at her sleeping daughter. "Grant still thinks you were working against me, doesn't he?"

"Oh, absolutely," Natalie laughed, leaning against the doorframe. "Poor guy is probably sitting in some dingy motel right now, trying to piece together how his grand mistress and his obedient wife teamed up to wipe him out. He truly believed he was the smartest man in every room he walked into."

"Arrogance is a fatal flaw," Claire replied softly. "He thought buying me silence with diamond bracelets and designer bags would keep me blind. He never realized I was just waiting for the right moment to pull the rug out from under his entire empire."

Natalie raised her mug in a silent toast. "To the best business partnership in history."
