Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s UltimatumBy 9:30 PM, Grant was pacing his empty, echoing foyer like a caged tiger, his phone glued to his ear.

He had called Claire's father, Richard. Voicemail. He had called Claire’s brother in Chicago. Voicemail. He had even called their family lawyer, Arthur Vance, who had sleepily informed him that Claire had retained her own representation—the most vicious, high-priced divorce shark in New York City—three weeks ago.

His phone buzzed violently in his palm.

A text message from Natalie.

“Grant, babe, where are you? The reservation at Le Bernardin is slipping away, and I’m freezing out here on Fifth. Are you coming or what?”

Grant stared at the screen, a wave of furious revulsion washing over him. Natalie. Beautiful, expensive, useless Natalie. She didn't know anything about corporate liquidation, freezing assets, or prenup loopholes. She only knew how to pose for photos and spend his money.

"I'm dealing with an emergency," he typed back furiously. “Stay put. I’ll wire you some cash for an Uber.”

“An Uber? Grant, I’m not taking an Uber in a Valentino gown! Call me right now.”

He ignored her call, tossing his phone onto the bare marble floor. It skidded across the empty space and hit the baseboard with a hollow plastic clatter.

He needed to fix this. If the market caught wind that Grant Whitmore was suddenly facing a catastrophic, hostile divorce, Whitmore Urban Holdings' stock would tank before Monday morning bell. His primary investors—a predatory group of private equity heavyweights out of Boston—would smell blood in the water and vote him out as CEO.

He was standing on the edge of financial ruin, and his pregnant wife had pushed him off the cliff.

Suddenly, his car keys caught his eye. They were sitting on the console table—the only thing left in the room besides the American Express card and the wedding ring.

He snatched the keys, threw open the front door, and sprinted out into the pouring rain. He didn't care about Natalie anymore. He didn't care about Le Bernardin.

He was going to her parents’ house in Greenwich—their sprawling estate overlooking Long Island Sound.

If Claire thought she could run away with his unborn child and his life savings, she had another thing coming.
