chapter 1

The wheelchair stopped with a violent jolt.
The old man looked around. Endless pine trees surrounded him in every direction. There were no houses, no lights, no roads—only darkness.
His eldest son, Victor, opened the trunk and tossed a thin blanket onto the ground.
"Here. You'll be more comfortable."
The words sounded almost polite.
Almost.
The old man slowly lifted his tired eyes toward his three children.
Victor.
Emily.
Ryan.
The same children he had carried on his shoulders...
The same children he had worked three jobs to feed after their mother died.
Now they couldn't even pretend to love him.
"You don't have to do this," the old man whispered.
Victor laughed.
"We actually do."
Emily crossed her arms.
"The lawyer said everything becomes ours only after you're gone."
Ryan avoided eye contact, but he didn't stop his brother.
Not this time.
The old man's heart shattered.
"So... this is about the money."
Victor crouched beside the wheelchair with a cold smile.
"No, Dad."
"It's about our future."
Without another word, they removed the emergency water bag hanging behind his wheelchair.
Ryan quietly slipped the phone from the side pocket.
Emily folded the blanket back into the trunk.
Every escape was carefully planned.
Every chance of survival... erased.
Victor leaned close enough for his father to smell expensive cologne.
"You always told us nature takes care of everything."
"I guess tonight we'll find out."
The SUV disappeared into the darkness.
Its taillights became tiny red dots...
Then vanished forever.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
The old man sat frozen.
His fingers trembled uncontrollably.
Not because of the cold.
Because no father ever imagines hearing his own children sentence him to death.
...
Hours crawled by.
The temperature dropped below freezing.
Mist drifted through the trees like wandering ghosts.
He tried pushing the wheelchair forward.
The wheels immediately sank into thick mud.
No movement.
No strength.
No hope.
His breathing became shallow.
His chest tightened.
He remembered birthdays.
School graduations.
Christmas mornings.
Hospital nights when he never left their bedside.
Every sacrifice...
Forgotten.
He stared toward the empty road.
"Was I really such a burden...?"
Only the wind answered.
Then...
CRACK.
A branch snapped somewhere behind him.
He froze.
Another crack.
Closer.
Something enormous was moving between the trees.
Heavy footsteps.
Measured.
Patient.
His pulse exploded.
Golden eyes appeared first.
Then another pair.
Then a gigantic gray wolf slowly stepped into the moonlight.
It wasn't just large.
It was enormous.
Its thick silver fur shimmered beneath the moon.
Old battle scars crossed its muzzle.
Its amber eyes never blinked.
The old man closed his eyes.
"So this is how it ends..."
Instead...
He heard a soft whine.
Not a growl.
Not snarling.
A whimper.
He slowly opened his eyes.
The wolf had stopped only a few feet away.
Its ears tilted forward.
Its nose twitched.
It stared directly into his face...
Almost...
Like it remembered him.
The old man couldn't understand.
Then something impossible happened.
The wolf carefully stepped closer...
And gently rested its massive head on the old man's trembling knee.
Warm tears rolled down the old man's cheeks.
"I know you..."
he whispered without thinking.
The wolf suddenly lifted its head toward the stars...
And unleashed one long haunting howl that echoed across the entire forest.
Within seconds...
More howls answered.
One.
Three.
Seven.
Ten.
The darkness came alive.
Shapes moved between the trees.
One after another...
An entire wolf pack emerged from the shadows.
The old man believed death had finally arrived.
He had no idea...
The wolves weren't gathering to hunt him.
They were gathering...
To protect him.
