CHAPTER 7 — One Year Later... The Letter That Was Never Meant to Be Found

One year after the trial...
The story had faded from the headlines.
Victor remained behind bars.
Emily had disappeared from public life.
Ryan, after cooperating with authorities, was serving a reduced sentence and attending counseling, hoping one day to become a different man.
As for the old man...
He had moved into a small cabin overlooking the protected forest.
He refused luxury.
He refused interviews.
Every morning, he walked—or rather rolled in his wheelchair—to the edge of the trees with Sarah beside him.
Sometimes...
Just before sunrise...
A familiar gray silhouette appeared between the pines.
The old alpha wolf.
Neither of them ever crossed the invisible line between man and wilderness.
They simply looked at each other.
It was enough.
Then, one rainy afternoon...
Sarah received a phone call from the family lawyer.
"There is one final safety deposit box."
"I wasn't allowed to open it until exactly one year after the trial."
Inside the old bank vault rested a small wooden box wrapped in faded cloth.
It contained only three things.
A silver pocket watch.
An old photograph.
And a sealed envelope addressed to Sarah.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
"My dear daughter...
If you are reading this, it means I have finally found peace.
But there is something I never had the courage to tell anyone.
You were never abandoned.
I chose you."
Sarah burst into tears.
The old man lowered his head.
"I wanted to tell you so many times..."
"When I met you in that orphanage, everyone said I was making a mistake."
"They said you weren't my blood."
"But the moment you smiled at me..."
"I knew you were already my daughter."
Sarah hugged him tightly.
"You gave me a family..."
"You saved me long before the wolves saved you."
The old man smiled.
"No..."
"You were the one who saved me."
Neither of them noticed the final item hidden beneath the photograph.
A folded map.
A red circle marked one location deep inside the protected forest.
Next to it, seven handwritten words:
"The truth begins beneath the oldest oak."
Three days later...
Sarah and Sheriff Morris followed the map into the forest.
The giant oak still stood exactly where the map indicated.
Its trunk was wider than a pickup truck.
The sheriff began digging.
Less than two feet below the roots...
The shovel struck metal.
A heavy iron chest.
Neither of them realized...
They had just uncovered a secret that had remained buried for more than forty years.
