CHAPTER 5 — “The Vault That Changed Everything”

The silver key looked ordinary.
Small.
Scratched.
Almost worthless.
But Richard Ashford stared at it as if it were a loaded weapon.
His lawyer leaned toward him.
"Richard... tell me that vault doesn't exist."
Richard remained silent.
That was all the answer anyone needed.
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
Journalists rushed toward the stage.
Investors frantically called their assistants.
Within minutes, Ashford Technologies' stock began crashing as news spread across social media.
"Billionaire Accused of Stealing Brother's Identity."
"Dead Man Walks Into Gala."
"Thirty-Year Corporate Fraud?"
Every headline was worse than the last.
Thomas calmly turned to the lead detective.
"I'll open the vault myself."
An hour later...
A convoy of police vehicles stopped outside an abandoned bank on the edge of the city.
The underground vault hadn't been opened in nearly three decades.
Dust covered every surface.
Rust coated the steel doors.
Thomas inserted the silver key.
It fit perfectly.
The heavy lock clicked.
Everyone held their breath.
Inside...
There was no gold.
No cash.
No diamonds.
Only one weathered wooden chest.
Thomas slowly lifted the lid.
Inside lay dozens of engineering notebooks...
Original blueprints...
Prototype sketches...
Cassette recordings...
And hundreds of handwritten pages documenting every step of an invention that had transformed a tiny garage project into one of the world's largest technology empires.
Each page carried two signatures.
Thomas Ashford.
Richard Ashford.
The detective looked at Richard.
"These documents establish joint ownership."
Richard's legs weakened.
But Thomas wasn't finished.
Hidden beneath the notebooks...
He found one final envelope.
Its front read:
"If you're reading this... Richard betrayed me."
Thomas frowned.
"I didn't write this."
The room froze.
May you like
If Thomas hadn't written it...
Then who had?
