Chapter 10 - The Shocking Twist

Six months later.
The trial of Derek Sterling was the trial of the decade. With the audio recording from the wedding cake incident, the emergency room records from past victims, and the video of his violent home invasion, Derek was sentenced to twenty-five years in state prison without the possibility of parole for ten years.
Patricia Sterling was indicted for obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and corporate fraud, destroying the Sterling legacy once and for all.
I stood on the balcony of the top floor of Sterling-Vance Enterprises—now officially renamed Vance Global Logistics. As the owner of fifty-one percent of the combined shares, I was officially sworn in as Chief Executive Officer.
Lena walked out onto the balcony, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. She handed one to me.
"To new beginnings," Lena said, raising her glass.
"To freedom," I replied, clinking my glass against hers.
I took a sip, looking out over the city skyline. But as I looked at Lena, something small caught my eye in her open briefcase sitting on the patio table.
Inside the bag was an open manila folder. On the top page was a bank statement showing a massive wire transfer from five years ago—a transfer of ten million dollars into a private offshore account in the Bahamas.
The sender's name was Patricia Sterling.
The recipient's name was Maya Lin.
I froze, my hand stopping mid-air.
I looked closer at the document. The wire transfer date was two days before Maya Lin’s alleged accident down the stairs five years ago.
My stomach dropped into a cold, dark abyss.
Maya hadn't been an innocent victim who got lucky and escaped. Maya—Lena—had planned this entire game from the very beginning. Five years ago, she had taken ten million dollars from Patricia to disappear, but instead of walking away, she had manufactured the entire marriage between Derek and me. She knew Derek’s psychological triggers. She knew he would snap under pressure. She had nudged Derek toward the cake, suggested the wooden platform underneath, and engineered the entire public execution of the Sterling family to take control of their corporate empire through me.
I turned slowly to look at Lena.
She was looking at me, holding her glass, a small, terrifyingly brilliant smile on her lips.
"You figured it out, didn't you?" Lena asked softly, taking a calm sip of her drink.
"You didn't just help me save myself," I whispered, my voice trembling as the realization washed over me. "You used me to execute the perfect takeover."
May you like
Lena set her glass down on the balcony railing and leaned closer, her eyes gleaming with absolute victory.
"Derek thought he was marrying a victim," Lena whispered into my ear. "Patricia thought she was buying silence. But you and I, Claire... we just bought an empire. And the best part? Nobody will ever suspect the two broken women who won."
