Chapter 13 - The New Terms

The silence in the grand office stretched heavy and suffocating. Arthur Sterling stared down at the dossier as if it were a loaded weapon pointed directly between his eyes. He had spent fifty years building a shipping empire, treating competitors like pawns and politicians like investments, only to discover he was a minor player in a game designed by someone else entirely.

"I didn't invite you up here to destroy you, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting cleanly through the tension. I steepled my fingers, leaning forward slightly. "Destruction is messy, and bad for logistics. Veritas prefers efficiency."

Arthur looked up, a faint, desperate spark of hope flickering in his weathered eyes. "What do you want? A hostile takeover? A controlling majority stake? Name your terms."

"Simple," I replied, sliding a single sheet of paper across the desk, separate from the dossier. "Sterling Logistics will immediately sever all remaining ties with any legacy Prescott entities. You will publicly issue a statement condemning Weston’s financial misconduct. And most importantly..."

I paused, letting my gaze lock onto his.

"...you will cede sixty percent voting control of your primary freight corridors to the Veritas Infrastructure Trust. In exchange, Veritas will inject two hundred million in emergency liquidity to stabilize your stock, and your name remains on the building as a figurehead CEO."

Arthur’s breath hitched. Sixty percent. It meant handing over absolute sovereignty of his life's work. It meant becoming an employee in the empire he once ruled.

"That's... that's surrender," he choked out, his hands trembling as he stared at the contract.

"No, Arthur," I corrected, my tone turning glacial. "Surrender implies you had a choice. Right now, you have two options: sign the papers and keep your dignity, or walk out those doors and watch federal marshals lock your corporate headquarters before the bell rings at noon."

He looked at the pen resting beside the document. He looked at my face—calm, unyielding, and utterly absolute. Slowly, with the defeated grace of a fading king, Arthur reached out, picked up the pen, and signed his name.
