Chapter 4 - The Prenup Clause

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the photo of Derek smashing my face into the wedding cake was trending at the top of every major news outlet and social media platform. The headline was viral gold: "Billionaire Heir Arrested at Reception After Wedding Cake Assault."

I sat in the corner office of my attorney, Marcus Kane, wearing a plain gray sweater and sweatpants. My cheek was swollen and dark purple, but the lawyer's eyes were fixed on the document laid out on the glass table.

Patricia Sterling blew into the office like a hurricane, flanked by three corporate lawyers.

"This is extortion!" Patricia raged, slamming her designer handbag onto the table. "Claire, you will sign a statement immediately declaring this was a misinterpretation, or we will ruin you! You won't get a single penny from the Sterling estate!"

Marcus didn't even look up from his glasses. He casually slid a stapled document across the table toward Patricia’s head counsel.

"Mrs. Sterling, your son's legal team insisted on adding a strict prenuptial agreement to protect your family's assets," Marcus said smoothly. "However, my client added a single, non-negotiable clause before signing three weeks ago. Clause 14B: The Domestic Abuse Contingency."

Patricia’s lead lawyer picked up the document, his eyes scanning the page. Slowly, the color drained from his face.

"Read it aloud, draft counsel," Marcus commanded politely.

"In... in the event of documented physical abuse or assault committed by Derek Sterling against Claire Vance within the marriage," the lawyer stammered, "the offender forfeits all claims to premarital joint ventures, triggers an immediate legal separation, and surrenders twenty percent of his voting shares in Sterling Enterprises to the victim as punitive damages."
