Chapter 6 - The Ghost from the Past

That night, an encrypted file arrived in my personal email inbox. There was no subject line, only an attachment labeled: "Sterling_Pattern.pdf."

I opened it. My heart slammed against my ribs.

It wasn't just corporate financial records. It was a dossier of police reports, non-disclosure agreements, and hospital intake forms dating back seven years.

There were three other women.

Three former girlfriends of Derek Sterling who had landed in emergency rooms with broken wrists, fractured jaws, and severe concussions. In every single case, Patricia Sterling had stepped in with her legal army, paid the women millions of dollars in exchange for signed NDAs, and wiped the official police blotters clean.

Derek hadn't just "lost his temper" with me. He was a serial abuser whose family had spent a decade buying his freedom.

My hands trembled as I scrolled through the pages. Then, I reached the last document in the folder. It was a medical report from five years ago detailing a woman who had suffered a traumatic brain injury after being pushed down a flight of stairs at a private resort.

Her name was Maya Lin.

I stared at the name. It sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place it.

Suddenly, my apartment door lock chimes sounded. Someone was entering the keycode.

I leaped up from the desk, grabbing the heavy glass vase off the entry table. The door swung open, and Lena walked in, carrying a bag of groceries. She looked at the vase in my hands, then at my terrified expression.

"Claire? What's wrong?" she asked, setting the bags down.

"Lena," I breathed, my heart pounding in my ears. "Look at this email. Someone just sent me Derek’s entire history. He’s done this to three other women."

Lena’s face remained completely still. She didn't look surprised. She didn't gasp.

She just walked over to the desk, pulled up a chair, and looked at the screen.

"I know," Lena said softly.
