Chapter 7 - The Mastermind Behind the Veil

I backed away from Lena, my mind racing. "What do you mean, you know? How could you know about this?"
Lena looked up at me, her eyes filled with a terrifyingly calm determination. She reached into her purse, pulled out an old, faded driver's license, and tossed it onto the desk next to the computer.
I looked down at the plastic card.
The photo was Lena. But the name printed beside it wasn't Lena Cruz.
It was Maya Lin.
I felt the air leave my lungs. "You... you were the girl who was pushed down the stairs?"
"Five years ago," Lena said, her voice dripping with venom. "I was twenty-two. I was Derek's assistant, then his secret girlfriend. When I tried to break up with him, he threw me down the grand staircase at his family's estate in Aspen. I was in a coma for two weeks. When I woke up, his mother had paid off my parents, destroyed the security footage, and threatened to destroy my brother's career if I ever spoke his name again."
"So you... changed your name?"
"I got plastic surgery to repair my cheekbone. I changed my legal identity. I went to business school. And I spent three years positioning myself to become your personal assistant," Lena explained, her eyes locking onto mine. "I knew Derek would target someone like you eventually—wealthy, successful, powerful—because his ego couldn't handle an independent woman. I needed to be close to his next target to make sure he didn't kill her."
I stood frozen in the middle of the room. The woman who had been my maid of honor, my closest confidante for two years, had built her entire life around taking down my husband.

"Did you use me?" I whispered, feeling a sudden pang of betrayal.
"I protected you, Claire," Lena said, her voice softening. "I gave you the hidden recorder button. I drafted the prenup clause and slipped it into the stack of legal documents for your lawyer to present. I didn't push you into his arms, but when I saw him targeting you, I made sure you had the weapons to fight back."
