Chapter 1 — The Babies With My Eyes

The first thing I noticed wasn't Emily.
It was the little boy.
His tiny fingers clutched the faded strap of the baby carrier while the Georgia wind blew dust across the empty roadside. He couldn't have been more than three months old, but when he turned his head toward my SUV, my entire body went numb.
Those eyes.
Blue.
Exactly like mine.
Then the little girl yawned.
The same dark brown hair I had as a baby.
The same small birthmark behind her left ear—the one every man in my family carried.
"No..." I whispered.
Ashley rolled her eyes beside me.
"Oh, please. Every baby looks the same."
But I couldn't stop staring.
Emily shifted both babies closer to her chest, protecting them from the passing trucks.
She looked thinner than I remembered.
Her cheeks had sunk.
Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.
Yet somehow she still carried herself with quiet dignity.
Ashley lowered the passenger window and laughed.
"So this is what happens when liars run out of rich husbands."
She tossed a folded twenty-dollar bill onto the dirt.
It fluttered through the air before landing near Emily's shoes.
Emily never looked down.
Instead, she looked directly at me.
Not with hatred.
Not with bitterness.
Only disappointment.
The kind that hurts far more than anger.
Then she quietly turned away.
As she walked, one of the babies reached a tiny hand toward me.
My heart lurched.
"Drive," Ashley snapped.
I couldn't move.
"Michael!"
Finally, I pressed the accelerator.
The rearview mirror showed Emily growing smaller until she disappeared behind a cloud of dust.
But the image refused to leave my mind.
That night I opened the old divorce file for the first time in over a year.
Every accusation.
Every photograph.
Every statement.
Everything that had convinced me Emily had betrayed me.
For twelve months I had believed I was the victim.
Now...
For the first time...
I wondered if I had been someone's fool.
The following morning I hired the best private investigator in Atlanta.
David Reynolds had spent twenty-five years uncovering corporate fraud.
He accepted my case with one sentence.
"If you're asking me, you're already afraid of the answer."
He wasn't wrong.
Three days later he called.
"Michael... stop whatever you're doing."
I closed my office door.
"What is it?"
"I've confirmed one thing."
My throat tightened.
"The twins are almost certainly yours."
The room spun.
"What?"
"Their birth dates line up perfectly with the week before your divorce hearing."
I leaned against the wall.
That week.
Emily had begged me not to leave.
She cried.
She tried to hug me.
I pushed her away.
She whispered, "Please... there's something you don't know."
I never let her finish.
Now every memory came back like shattered glass.
"There's more," David continued.
"Someone made sure you never learned she was pregnant."
I could barely breathe.
"Find out who."
His answer chilled me.
"I already have."
That evening David handed me a thick envelope.
Every page destroyed another piece of the life I thought I knew.
Hospital records.
Phone logs.
Security footage.
Financial transactions.
Emails.
Deleted messages recovered from backup servers.
One name appeared again.
Ashley Bennett.
Not once.
Not twice.
Forty-seven separate times.
My fiancée.
The woman sleeping in my house.
The woman planning our wedding.
The woman who had spent the last year convincing me Emily deserved everything that happened to her.
By midnight I realized one horrifying truth.
Ashley hadn't simply lied.
She had carefully rewritten my entire reality.
And I had helped her do it.
The investigation was only beginning.
But my marriage...
May you like
Had never truly ended.
Because someone else had stolen it before I signed the divorce papers.
