Chapter 9 — The Letter My Father Never Sent

A week before the final hearing, Rachel called.

"There’s something you should both see."

Emily and I met her at the law office.

She placed an old, weathered envelope on the conference table.

"I found this while reviewing your father's estate records," she said. "It was never mailed."

My hands trembled as I recognized the handwriting.

My father's.

The envelope was addressed to me.

I opened it carefully.

Michael,

If you're reading this, then I waited too long to tell you something that matters.

Never choose the person who tells you what you want to hear over the one who tells you the truth.

Emily isn't perfect.

Neither are you.

But she has a heart that won't abandon people when life becomes difficult.

If you ever have to choose between pride and love...

Choose love.

Pride always charges interest.

I couldn't finish the letter.

Tears blurred every word.

Emily quietly reached across the table and placed a hand over mine.

Not because everything was fixed.

But because grief no longer belonged to only one of us.

Rachel slid another document forward.

"Your father also left instructions for the trustees."

I looked up.

"He wanted the Carter Family Foundation to be transferred to the twins when they become adults."

Emily frowned.

"The twins?"

Rachel nodded.

"He wrote that the family's greatest legacy shouldn't be wealth."

She smiled gently.

"It should be kindness."

For the first time since my father died, I felt as though he had finally spoken directly to me.

May you like

And somehow...

He still believed I could become a better man.
