Chapter 10 — The Day the Truth Won

The courthouse was overflowing.

Reporters waited outside before sunrise.

Everyone wanted to witness Ashley Bennett's sentencing.

Ashley entered wearing a plain gray suit instead of designer clothing.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Not because prison had changed her.

Because the lies that once made her powerful had finally disappeared.

The prosecutor presented months of evidence.

Financial fraud.

Witness tampering.

Forgery.

Identity manipulation.

Obstruction of justice.

The recordings Emily had preserved.

The financial records David uncovered.

The testimony from Ashley's own brother.

One by one...

Every piece fit together.

When the judge asked Ashley if she wished to speak, the courtroom became silent.

She stood slowly.

For a long moment, she stared at me.

"I loved winning," she said quietly.

"I confused winning with happiness."

No one interrupted.

"I thought if I controlled enough people, I'd never be alone."

Her voice cracked.

"But all I built was a life where nobody trusted me."

Then she turned toward Emily.

"I'm sorry."

Emily remained still.

After everything that had happened...

Those words could never erase the past.

But they mattered.

Not because they repaired the damage.

Because they finally acknowledged it.

The judge imposed a lengthy sentence along with restitution for the financial losses caused by the conspiracy.

As Ashley was escorted from the courtroom, she looked back one final time.

Not at me.

At Noah and Lily.

Then she quietly lowered her head.

Outside, reporters rushed toward us.

Microphones appeared from every direction.

"Michael, do you forgive her?"

I looked at Emily.

Then at our children.

Finally, I answered.

"Forgiveness isn't pretending something never happened."

"It's refusing to let hatred decide what happens next."

May you like

That was the only statement we made.

Then we walked away together.
