Chapter 3 — The Secret No One Saw Coming

The elderly man walked with a polished cane, his expression cold enough to silence the entire parking lot.

Ashley folded her arms confidently.

"Well... this reunion is touching."

I stepped in front of Emily instinctively.

"What are you doing here?"

Ashley smiled.

"Finishing what I started."

One attorney handed me a thick legal file.

I opened it.

Custody Petition.

Emergency Guardianship.

My blood ran cold.

"What is this?"

Ashley spoke calmly.

"Emily has no permanent home."

"She has no income."

"She cannot legally provide stability."

She looked directly at the twins.

"So the court should place them somewhere... safer."

Emily clutched the babies tighter.

"You stay away from my children."

Ashley laughed.

"Our children?"

She turned toward the elderly man.

"Tell them."

The man sighed heavily before removing his glasses.

"My name is Richard Bennett."

"I represent the Bennett Family Trust."

David suddenly stepped beside me.

His face had changed.

He knew that name.

Richard continued.

"Twenty-eight years ago, Michael's father borrowed several million dollars from my family."

I frowned.

"What?"

"The debt was never repaid."

Ashley smiled wider.

"And your father signed collateral."

Richard slowly looked at the twins.

"The Carter family inheritance."

I felt my stomach twist.

"This makes no sense."

"It will."

Richard opened another file.

"Your grandfather established a private trust."

"Only biological heirs can inherit."

He looked toward the twins.

"If they are proven to be your children..."

He paused.

"...they immediately become beneficiaries of assets worth nearly eighty million dollars."

Silence.

Emily looked as shocked as I was.

Ashley finally stopped pretending.

She laughed.

"I never wanted you, Michael."

"I wanted access to your inheritance."

Every piece fell into place.

The fake affair.

The stolen letters.

The divorce.

Keeping me away from my own children.

If the twins disappeared...

No heirs.

No inheritance.

Everything could eventually be redirected.

David stepped forward.

"You've just confessed in front of six witnesses."

Ashley's smile faded.

Then something unexpected happened.

Emily reached into the baby's blanket and removed a tiny flash drive.

She held it up.

"I've been waiting a year."

Everyone froze.

"I knew no one would believe me."

"So I recorded everything."

Ashley stared at the flash drive.

For the first time since I'd met her...

She looked afraid.

Emily's voice was calm.

"You thought you stole my family."

She looked at me.

"You forgot one thing."

"I never stopped collecting the truth."

May you like

And that tiny flash drive contained enough evidence to destroy not only Ashley...

But an entire criminal conspiracy that reached far beyond our family.
