Chapter 4 — The Woman Who Came Prepared

Ashley’s smile vanished the moment she saw the flash drive in Emily’s hand.

For one full second, no one moved.

Not me.

Not the attorneys.

Not even Richard Bennett, the cold old man who had walked into that shelter parking lot like he owned every life standing there.

Emily held the twins close with one arm and lifted the flash drive higher with the other.

“You thought I was broken,” she said quietly. “I was never broken. I was waiting.”

Ashley took one step forward.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Emily gave a sad smile.

“That’s what you said the night you planted the necklace in my room.”

My blood turned cold.

Ashley froze.

Emily looked at me, but her voice stayed steady.

“She came to me that night after you left for work. She told me if I disappeared quietly, she would make sure you never hated me more than you already did.”

I stared at Ashley.

“You spoke to her?”

Ashley’s jaw tightened.

Emily continued.

“She said if I fought back, she would ruin my name, take my babies, and make sure no court ever believed a homeless woman over the future Mrs. Carter.”

I felt sick.

The babies stirred in Emily’s arms. Instinctively, I reached forward, but she stepped back.

That small movement hurt more than any insult.

I had not earned the right to comfort them.

David took the flash drive carefully from Emily and handed it to one of his own legal contacts, a woman named Rachel Moore, who had followed him to the shelter after reviewing the evidence.

Rachel plugged the drive into her laptop right there on the hood of David’s car.

The first video opened.

Ashley appeared on-screen, standing in Emily’s old bedroom.

She wore gloves.

In her hand was my mother’s diamond necklace.

I heard myself stop breathing.

The video showed Ashley sliding the necklace beneath Emily’s sweaters, then turning toward the doorway with a smile.

The second file played.

A recorded phone call.

Ashley’s voice was clear.

“She’s pregnant? Then make sure Michael never sees the hospital forms.”

A man replied, “That costs extra.”

“I don’t care. Pay whoever you need to pay.”

The third file.

Another call.

“Destroy the letters. Block the emails. I want her erased before the babies are born.”

Ashley lunged for the laptop.

David caught her wrist before she reached it.

“Careful,” he said. “That would make this even worse for you.”

Ashley ripped her arm away.

“You think this proves anything?” she hissed. “She still has no home. No money. No stability. A judge will see exactly what she is.”

Then Richard Bennett finally spoke.

“She is the mother of the heirs.”

Ashley turned to him sharply.

“What?”

Richard’s eyes remained on the twins.

“I came here believing you had secured the Carter line through marriage. Instead, you hid legitimate heirs from everyone.”

Ashley’s confidence cracked.

“You promised me protection.”

“I promised to protect the trust,” Richard said coldly. “Not your crimes.”

For the first time, Ashley looked truly afraid.

Then she smiled again.

But this smile was different.

Desperate.

Dangerous.

“You all think Emily is innocent,” she said.

Emily’s face tightened.

Ashley looked directly at me.

“Then ask her why she never told you about the third baby.”

The world stopped.

Emily went pale.

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“What third baby?”

Ashley’s eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction.

“Oh, Michael,” she said softly. “She didn’t lose everything because of me.”

Then she turned toward Emily.

“Tell him what really happened in that hospital.”

Emily closed her eyes.

May you like

And for the first time since I found her again…

She looked guilty.
